Melč between Castle Park, Pilgrimage and Slate Landscape

Melč combines a protected cultural monument with a pilgrimage site, a distinctive natural area and traces of slate mining. The Melčský potok flows through the village and joins the Moravice River. This gives Melč different points of interest for a trip: you can explore architecture and history, visit a religiously significant site or discover the landscape and the region’s mining history.

Melč Castle and Its Protected Surroundings

Melč Castle and its park are listed as a protected cultural monument. Its core dates from around the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries; one of its notable architectural features is the mansard roof. The castle also includes an English-style park and a perimeter wall. A state-protected nature park with numerous rare trees and shrubs extends around the castle.

Melč is also home to the Church of Saint Anthony of Padua. It was rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style and constructed in 1889–1890 according to plans by A. Bartel and the architect J. M. Olbrich.

Maria Talhof: Pilgrimage Site with a Marked Trail

Maria Talhof lies about 1 km from Melč and can be reached from the municipality via a yellow-marked hiking trail. The pilgrimage site includes a wooden cross and a Lourdes grotto built from stones. The site was restored on 14 September 1996 with a cross, an altar and a renewed Stations of the Cross.

The yellow-marked hiking trail from Maria Talhof leads to Melč. From there, hikers can take the bus back to Vítkov. This connection distinguishes the visit from a purely circular walk: the trail can be combined with a return journey without the outward and return routes necessarily being the same. Pilgrimages to the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross take place regularly in Maria Talhof.

Mokřinky and the Legacy of Slate Mining

Another highlight is Mokřinky, which is now used primarily as a recreational area. Abandoned tunnels and shafts provide shelter for protected animals; the bat habitats in the Mokřinky mines are among the largest in the Czech Republic. The Dědictví břidlice educational trail begins in Mokřinky and focuses on slate mining in the Vítkovsko area. In this way, the landscape complements a historical theme that extends beyond the history of the castle and church.

Traditions and Other Destinations

Local culture also includes events organized by the municipality of Melč. It organizes the traditional bear-leading custom as a community cultural event, as well as a community day.
