Dolní Benešov between castle history and a pond landscape

Dolní Benešov combines historic buildings with a landscape shaped by ponds, protected natural areas and centuries-old flood protection embankments. Castle, churches and historic details

Dolní Benešov Castle is an example of castle architecture from several stylistic periods. Its core dates back to the 16th century. The complex also retains a portal with a coat of arms dated 1498. The castle is registered as a protected cultural monument under registration number ÚSKP 24181/8-1357.

The English-style park at the castle adds another historical facet. It was established around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, covers 1.7 hectares and surrounds the castle buildings on all sides. This makes it possible to explore the castle’s history not only through individual architectural elements, but also through the design of its adjoining park.

The Church of Saint Martin in Dolní Benešov is another part of the town’s history. It is a protected cultural monument and was probably built as early as around 1678. The Chapel of the Holy Cross is a longitudinal Neo-Gothic chapel with a stepped gable. It was built in the 1870s from unrendered exposed brickwork, typical of the Historicist architecture of the Hlučínsko region. The historic character is complemented by the Immaculate Conception statue, a copy of a late Baroque statue whose original dates from the 1780s.

Nezmar Pond and protected landscape

A 3.6 km circular trail follows the shore of Nezmar Pond. Along the way, there are views of the town and the church. The pond also has a small facility for recreational sailing. A regular date in the annual calendar is the traditional fish harvest, which takes place every year on the first weekend of November. Nezmar therefore represents both a relaxing walk by the water and a tradition rooted in the region.

The area around Přehyně Pond is one of the two protected natural areas of Dolní Benešov. The Koutské a Zábřežské louky Nature Reserve extends across the cadastral areas of Dolní Benešov, Kravaře ve Slezsku and Zábřeh u Hlučína. Its landscape includes wet meadows, scattered groves and alluvial forests, as well as remnants of former river channels and periodically flooded pools in the Opava floodplain. The landscape of Dolní Benešov is also crossed by a unique system of centuries-old flood protection embankments.

Events and special experiences

In addition to the historic sights and paths by the water, there are other ways to experience the town from different perspectives. Zábřeh Airfield offers sightseeing flights. The “Hudební jaro na Hlučínsku” music festival takes place annually in Dolní Benešov.
