Bolatice: Local History, Educational Trail and Culture

Bolatice combines a long local history with vivid insights into regional traditions, an educational trail in the forest and several opportunities for exercise and leisure. The town is particularly interesting if you want to discover culture not just in a single building, but in various forms: as a church with a historical development, an open-air museum with preserved living and working areas, an archaeological exhibition without replicas and a landscape featuring technical and natural highlights.

Church, Relics and the Historical Beginnings of the Town

The first written mention of Bolatice dates from 1250. It appears in a letter issued by Pope Innocent IV in Lyon on 18 December 1250, transferring the area to the Cistercian monastery in Velehrad. The documented history of the town therefore reaches far back into the Middle Ages.

A visible focal point of the town’s history is the parish Church of Saint Stanislaus. It was built in 1703 and expanded to its present form in 1911–1912. The church houses relics of Saint Stanislaus, which were donated to it from Kraków in 2024. They are located in a reliquary in the left side aisle. The religious calendar also includes Odpust, the parish church’s patronal feast, which is celebrated every year on the Sunday after the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ.

Traditional Village Life at the Open-Air Museum

The Skanzen lidových tradic a řemesel open-air museum is located in one of the few remaining traditional village buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. During a tour, you can see traditional living quarters, a washhouse, a horse stable, a cowshed and a granary. The collection is complemented by craft tools, agricultural machinery and household appliances. This creates a tangible picture of how living, working and providing for daily needs were interconnected in an earlier village.

The open-air museum also includes an exhibition of experimental archaeology. Its archaeological section presents artefact finds from Bolatice; the exhibition contains no replicas, but its content was developed experimentally. In the experimental section, visitors learn how people lived in prehistoric times and what they needed to survive. Another special feature is the Muzeum souvků: meetings take place there twice a year, in April and September. Bolatice also has a permanent exhibition of glacial erratics, which is visited by the general public and schools.

An Educational Trail and Cycle Route for Active Days

The educational trail in Chuchelenský les forms a 6 km circular route. It starts and ends in Borová, a district of Bolatice, and is equipped with information panels about animals, plants and trees. Several rest areas are located along the route; the Zbojnička stream rises at one of them. The circular route therefore combines a manageable distance with nature observation and brief thematic information.

For longer cycling tours, the 29 km Cycle Route 554 Prajzská cesta runs from Kravaře to Šilheřovice through Bolatice.

Water, Sport and Landscape

The outdoor pool and sports recreation area in Bolatice has a large pool measuring 30 × 25 m, a non-swimmer pool measuring 15 × 25 m and a children’s paddling pool measuring 5 × 10 m. Other activities offered there include beach volleyball, pétanque and table tennis; bicycles can also be rented. The area complements the cultural attractions with a distinctly more sports-oriented part of the stay.

Another facet of the surrounding area is the dry flood-protection reservoirs in Bolatice. They are significant landscape features. Their technical design, their integration into the landscape and the fauna and flora present there are all interesting.
