Slavkov – Culture and Nature around the Hvozdnice

Slavkov combines remarkable architectural history with a protected landscape. The village is home to Slavkovský zámek, the oldest building in Slavkov; at the same time, the Hvozdnice Nature Reserve extends into the cadastral area of Slavkov u Opavy. This brings together castle history, sacred architecture, wetlands and traces of a geological history reaching far back in time within a compact thematic area.

Castle and Sacred Buildings in Slavkov

Slavkovský zámek was created in 1586 by converting the original fortress. The chapel with its Renaissance vault is documented as the only surviving and protected historic part of the complex. Those interested in the development of historic buildings will therefore find here not just a single date of construction, but also the transition from an original fortress to a later castle.

Another highlight is the parish church of St. Anne. Václav Sigmund Sedlnický z Choltic had it built between 1657 and 1665. The church is a single-nave Baroque building and was originally dedicated to All Saints. Tombstones of the Lords of Slavkov from the second half of the 16th century are embedded in its walls. This combination of church architecture and older memorial elements makes the parish church a place where several periods of local history can be read.

The parish church also contains a sandstone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk from 1722, which was moved there. The front of its pedestal bears a relief coat of arms of the donors, the Counts Podstatský z Prusinovic. Zámecká Street is also home to the Baroque Chapel of St. Barbara, which dates from the beginning of the 19th century. The castle, parish church and chapels thus offer different cultural points of interest for a stay in Slavkov.

Hvozdnice Educational Trail and Nature Reserve

The natural side of the village can be seen in the Hvozdnice Nature Reserve. It contains species-rich communities of ponds, wetlands and remnants of floodplain forests. These habitats provide a refuge for many bird and amphibian species. The area is therefore not merely a scenic backdrop, but also a specific habitat with various aquatic and wetland structures.

The Hvozdnice Educational Trail runs through the protected natural area. It is 9.5 km long and follows three ponds with wetlands and pools. For planning an excursion, the route thus provides a clear focus: the main features are bodies of water, wet habitats and the protected landscape, rather than just any hiking route. The educational trail allows visitors to walk through the nature reserve and can be reached from at least four directions: from Slavkov, Hertice, Otice and Uhlířov.

Hvozdnice also offers special geological details. The bedrock comes to the surface in several places. Clayey-silty shales contain fossilized remains of invertebrates, particularly shells of cephalopods and bivalves, as well as plant remains from the Lower Carboniferous.
