Velké Hoštice: Baroque Heritage and a Landscape Park
Accommodation in Velké Hoštice
Velké Hoštice invites you to plan a stay around architectural history, landscapes and regional routes. Notable landmarks include a late Baroque church, several chapels, a château with art-historical connections and an extensive landscape park. A Baroque statue in the village square and an infantry bunker are also among the specific points of interest here. This means your travel plans need not stop at a single building.
Church and chapels: design, period and features
The Church of St John the Baptist is a monumental late Baroque religious building with a two-towered façade. It was built in 1773 to a design by Jakub Pánek, and its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross. Frescoes by Franz Anton Sebastini have been preserved inside. The construction period, architect, floor plan and paintings offer different perspectives on the same building. The Latin-cross floor plan describes the structure’s form, while the frescoes add preserved paintings to its architectural context.
The Chapel of the Virgin Mary dates from the second half of the 18th century. The Chapel of Corpus Christi is located near the Church of St John the Baptist. It dates from the second half of the 19th century, has a semicircular floor plan and is set into an enclosure wall. A Baroque statue of St John of Nepomuk also stands in the village square. The buildings differ in form and date, giving the village’s religious architecture several distinct facets.
Château and landscape park
Velké Hoštice Château was converted into a late Baroque aristocratic residence in the second half of the 18th century. The frescoes in the château were painted by the Baroque painter Antonio Sebastini. Archaeological excavations in the municipality’s cadastral area were also the subject of an exhibition at the château. The château’s history thus brings together architecture, painting and an archaeological theme.
The extensive landscape park was established in the late 18th or early 19th century. It adds a landscape-focused perspective to the area’s architectural history. These offer different points of focus for planning your trip: the château and its frescoes represent architectural and art history, while the park reflects the history of a designed landscape. You can decide whether to focus your stay mainly on buildings and their features, or also on the development of the park.
Local history and regional routes
Velké Hoštice is home to an infantry bunker that formed part of the fortifications along the Czechoslovak border. It adds a different historical theme to the Baroque buildings. Another way to look beyond local history is cycling route No. 55, “Slezská magistrála,” which connects Krnov, Opava and Velké Hoštice. This connection offers a practical starting point for further route planning, without implying any particular route through the village.
Bus and train services connect Velké Hoštice with neighbouring towns and villages. Together with the cycling route, they offer guidance if you want to include other places in your travel plans alongside the local cultural attractions.
Accommodation for planning your trip
Accommodation options in Velké Hoštice are suggested for independent trip planning, including local hotels and affordable holiday homes. If you choose a particular place to stay, check its current availability before booking. This lets you choose accommodation to suit your own plans, while the buildings, landscape park and regional routes provide the context for your stay.
