Chuchelná: History, Forest and Cycling Route

Chuchelná combines a distinctive Lichnovský history with sacred architecture, a military history museum and the Chuchelenský Forest. Lichnovský History and Notable Buildings

Chuchelná became the center of a large Lichnovský estate toward the end of the 17th century. Zámek Lichnovských served as a hunting lodge and country retreat. Today, the Chapel of St. Cross with the Lichnovských family crypt in a park beside the village pond in the center of Chuchelná is a distinctive historical landmark. The elaborately designed, romanticizing central building consists of exposed, unplastered brickwork. The crypt contains three restored sarcophagi of members of the princely Lichnovských family.

Zámecký Park now covers 5.5 hectares; its present form was created around the middle of the 19th century. The town’s church-building history also reflects significant disruptions: the original Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross was built in 1921 and 1922 and destroyed during the Second World War. The new Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross was designed by Jan Krömer and consecrated in 1996. The Lichnovských Mausoleum was designed and built in 1902 and 1903 by the renowned Opava architect Julius Lundwall. The estate, residence, park, chapel and mausoleum represent different stages in the history of the locality.

Museum with a Military History Focus

The Muzeum Chuchelná has a permanent exhibition on the Second World War from 1938 to 1945. The military history exhibition grew out of the years of work by members of a historical and regional studies association who focus on the region’s wartime history. Military uniforms are on display in the museum; it also includes an accessible air-raid shelter. Visitors can also try guarding a border crossing there. The Muzeum Chuchelná offers guided tours by prior arrangement. A visit therefore combines exhibits, an accessible historic site and an activity of your own.

Forest, Plants and Cycling

The Chuchelenský Forest is known in scientific literature, particularly among geologists who study the Quaternary and among botanists. The forest is home to montane and submontane plant elements, including sedmikvítek evropský, žebrovice různolistá, samorostlík klasnatý, kýchavice zelenokvětá and věsenka nachová. The dense forests around Chuchelná invite visitors to hike and cycle on the regional cycling routes.

For a clearly defined cycling tour, there is the 12.5 km-long cycling route 6096. It runs from the Krzanowice / Chuchelná border crossing via Bohuslavice and Kozmice and joins cycling route 55 before reaching Hlučín Lake. The Chuchelná–Krzanowice border crossing provides a connection to Poland for local border traffic. The connection to cycling route 55 offers another designated link in addition to the 12.5-kilometre route.
