Píšť – Pilgrimage Site with a Historic Sundial

Píšť combines religious history, distinctive cultural monuments and summer activities with an unusual feature: the park sundial measures 16 × 47 metres. In addition, there is the pilgrimage to Saint Lawrence, a historic chapel, an international mini-golf tournament and a nature monument in the surrounding area. The town is therefore defined not by a single landmark, but by several themes that can be given different weight when planning a trip.

Church, Pilgrimage and Historic Buildings

The focal point is the Church of Saint Lawrence in Píšť, built in 1743. Its interior preserves Baroque statues of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. The religious significance of the site was expanded in 2002: the church was established as a Marian pilgrimage site for prayers for peace and reconciliation between nations.

The pilgrimage site at the church also includes a Stations of the Cross completed in 2003, with ceramic reliefs, and a Lourdes grotto. Another cultural and historical highlight is the Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk. The octagonal building is a cultural monument from the late 19th century. Inside the chapel is a sandstone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk from the 18th century. The church, Stations of the Cross, grotto and chapel thus represent different periods and forms of religious art in Píšť. The history of the buildings and their furnishings extends from the 18th century to the 21st century: the 1743 church building and the 18th-century statue were followed by the establishment of the Marian pilgrimage site in 2002 and the Stations of the Cross completed in 2003. The pilgrimage site therefore encompasses both older works of art and more recent religious additions.

The Píšť Park Sundial

The park sundial is remarkable not only for its dimensions. When it was created in July 2005, it was the largest sundial of its kind in Europe.

Summer, Mini-Golf and Pilgrimage Dates

Píšť has a local outdoor swimming pool, which is used in summer, as well as a local mini-golf course, which is also used in summer. An international mini-golf tournament is held every year at the mini-golf course near the outdoor pool as part of Czech-Polish cross-border cooperation. The town thus combines a seasonal leisure activity with an event that explicitly reflects its cross-border character.

An important date in the annual calendar is the pilgrimage to Saint Lawrence, known as the “Píšťský odpust”. It takes place every year in August. Several pilgrimage events are held in Píšť during the week around 10 August.

Border Crossing and Nature in the Surrounding Area

Píšť has an international border crossing to Owsiszcze. In the surrounding area, the Hranečník Nature Monument protects a colony of grey herons (Ardea cinerea), which is rare in northern Moravia. This natural aspect complements the cultural and pilgrimage themes with opportunities to observe regional wildlife, without limiting the town to just one type of travel.
