Branka u Opavy combines a long local history with a landscape best appreciated through its formations and views. The municipality lies in an approximately 300-metre-wide valley of the Moravice, running from north to south between the foothills of the Nízký Jeseník. To the west, the Hanuše ridge, at 427 metres, bounds the valley; to the east lies the 376-metre-high Branecký kopec, also known as Branská hůrka. From the surrounding area, views extend across the fertile Opava Lowland; Praděd and the Jeseníky range are visible on the western horizon. Branka u Opavy was first mentioned in 1257, when the municipality was part of the Hradec estate. Individual landmarks in the town also date back a long way: the first written mention of Branka’s mill dates from 1339. The historic water mill is listed as a sight in Branka u Opavy and the surrounding area.

In the town centre stands the larger Chapel of the Holy Trinity, which was consecrated on 11 June 1843. Its history also includes the new bell named “Václav Jan”, which has been rung since 15 October 1944. A monument in the centre also commemorates the victims of the First World War. It was unveiled on 28 October 1923; the hourglass motif on the monument symbolises the transience of life. A walk through the town therefore combines specific historical dates with visible memorial landmarks.

Cycling Routes, Pump Track and Recreation Area

There are two different cycling connections for active days. Cycle Route 551 from Opava to Hradec nad Moravicí passes through Branka u Opavy and is used by cyclists and inline skaters. The marked Cycle Route 6055 runs from Branka u Opavy via Chvalíkovice and Vršovice to Raduň and connects to Route 551 in Branka.

Branka u Opavy’s pump track offers a separate option for riding. It is a closed, artificially built circuit with rollers and banked curves that can be ridden without pedalling. The Výletiště recreation area also features children’s play equipment, leisure facilities, a covered wooden pavilion with seating, a place to charge electronic devices, a bicycle pump and an outdoor fire pit. These different facilities make the area an interesting destination in its own right, alongside the longer cycling routes.

Events with Local Character

The events calendar is also part of the townscape. The Spolek pro děti ZŠ a MŠ Branka u Opavy association continues in the municipality a tradition of events for children that has existed for more than ten years. The summer cinema in Branka u Opavy is a traditional film screening that attracts visitors from other places as well as local residents.

Another example is the Branský Literature Festival, a literary and musical festival in Branka u Opavy. The eighth edition took place on Saturday, 8 June 2024, from 4 p.m. in the Czech-Polish Friendship Pavilion.
