Jakartovice

Jakartovice combines a long local history with traces of slate mining and a varied landscape. This creates a destination where you can discover culture, nature, seasonal excursions and regional transport history in different ways. Particularly interesting is the combination of dated buildings and works of art, protected habitats, waterside destinations and paths through the surrounding area.

Historical traces in the village

Jakartovice was founded by German colonists and was first mentioned in 1250. During the Bohemian–Hungarian Wars, the village declined in 1472; it was resettled in 1540. This eventful history is one of the most important points of reference for anyone who wants to get to know the village not only as a starting point for excursions, but also as a historically shaped destination. Two years stand out particularly clearly in the village landscape as markers of regional cultural history. The Baroque Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary dates from 1755. In addition, there is the Baroque statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, dating from 1725. Together, the church and statue form tangible evidence of Jakartovice’s Baroque past, without requiring you to limit yourself to a single attraction.

Slate, geopark and protected nature

Jakartovice is part of the Krajina Břidlice National Geopark. The Štola Jakartovice was created through the mining of clay slate and thus represents the geological and mining character of the area. At the same time, it is an important wintering site for bats, particularly the greater mouse-eared bat (Myotis myotis). Important for planning your excursion: the Štola Jakartovice is not open to the public; entry is prohibited. Remarkable natural features can also be found outside the Štola. Between Jakartovice and Mladecko lies a complex of alluvial meadows with accompanying trees and shrubs. The Jakartovice area also serves to protect the dusky large blue butterfly (Maculinea nausithous). The surroundings of Jakartovice are suitable for hiking, offering an opportunity to combine local history and landscape during one stay.

Waterside destinations and paths through the surrounding area

Near Jakartovice lies a flooded slate quarry that is used for swimming in summer. This should be distinguished from several ponds in the forest between Jakartovice, Staré Heřminovy and Svobodné Heřmanice, near the 482 m-high Za Starou Vodou mountain. These ponds are not suitable for swimming. At the edge of Jakartovice, a forest path also leads towards Bohdanovice to several former ponds associated with slate mining; this path is also suitable for bicycles. Depending on your interests, you can therefore focus on water, hiking, cycling or mining history.

Seasonal travel and local tradition

The Hvozdnický Express provides an additional way to explore the area. On the route between Opava and Svobodné Heřmanice, Jakartovice is a stop. In 2026, the train operates on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 1 May to 28 September. A tourist lodge is located in the forest approximately 1 km beyond Jakartovice and is rented out each year only from 1 April to 31 October. This explicitly limited season is an important distinction when choosing your travel period. If you would like to experience local traditions, the Jakartovský karmaš is one of the notable dates. The festival has been held annually on the first Saturday in September since 1995 and includes a mass, fairground attractions, brass music, refreshments and evening entertainment. The event thus adds a clearly scheduled cultural occasion to the quieter historical and scenic aspects of Jakartovice. Other destinations in this selection are Větřkovice, Melč, Kozmice, Závada, Slavkov, Dolní Benešov, Skřipov and Oldřišov.
