Mladecko – Natural Monument, Educational Trail and Cultural History

Mladecko is a place for days when nature observation, cultural discoveries and a variety of excursion destinations come together. Particularly characteristic are the Jakartovice Natural Monument, a nature-focused educational trail, historic buildings and a visitor route starting in Mladecko. This allows you to plan your stay around short discoveries in the area or a longer excursion.

Nature and Knowledge around Mladecko

The Jakartovice Natural Monument protects the dusky large blue butterfly (Maculinea nausithous), a Natura 2000 species. The protected area includes alluvial, species-poor wet meadows, a meandering watercourse and an alluvial forest lined with ash and alder trees. The natural monument also encompasses the cadastral area of Mladecko. The landscape thus combines open wet meadows, a watercourse and alluvial forest with a specific nature conservation theme. Those who wish not only to observe the surroundings but also to explore them in greater depth can follow the Přírodovědná naučná stezka Mladeckem educational trail. It comprises ten stations covering the history of the school and the town as well as the region’s fundamental ecosystems. The educational trail also provides information about nature conservation. The general public can use it to learn about Mladecko’s geological past and natural environment. Alongside the natural monument, this provides a route that brings together local history, geology, ecosystems and nature conservation in a single visit.

Historical Traces and Special Collections

One of the notable cultural landmarks is the Chapel of St. Joseph, built in 1882. Inside are a Neo-Gothic altar and a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk from the early 19th century. There is also a cross dating from 1904 in front of the chapel. These individual elements make the chapel a place where architectural history, sacred art and a memorial feature added at a later date come together. Another historical facet is represented by House No. 44, a log building. It is an immovable cultural monument and a vernacular wooden house in the East Sudeten architectural style, dating from 1830. The cultural picture is complemented by the history of Mladecký Dvůr: at the end of the 17th century, an earlier chateau was built in Mladecko; it was demolished in 1772. At the beginning of the 19th century, a new Empire-style chateau was subsequently built in Mladecký Dvůr. A spacious landscaped park was later created around the chateau. The Club of Military History also has its own focus. Its grounds are located 600 metres from Mladecko railway station and display historic military and civilian vehicles as well as aviation technology. Every year, the club holds the Výstava vojenské techniky exhibition of military technology in Mladecko.

Walking Trail and Longer Visitor Route

Two differently designed routes are of interest when planning your stay. A green-marked walking trail leads from Mladecko railway station to the Kružberk Reservoir after approximately 9 kilometres. In addition, Excursion No. 4 of the Municipality of Mladecko is a 52-kilometre visitor route starting in Mladecko. The difference between the walking trail to the reservoir and the considerably longer visitor route helps you take your preferred activity into account when choosing your accommodation: the focus can be either a hike with a fixed destination or an extended excursion.
