Filipovice – History Between Farm, Chapel and Pilgrimage Trail

Filipovice combines an unusual local history with a marked trail to a pilgrimage site. Anyone wishing to combine historical context with a hike when choosing a destination will find two different approaches here: the development of the settlement since the early 18th century and the steep footpath to Maria Talhof, located to the west.

From Farmstead to Settlement

Filipovice developed from a farmstead that belonged to the nearby domain of Vikštejn Castle. Count František Josef Filip of Hodic bought this farmstead in 1706 and subsequently founded Filipovice. As early as 1707, Filipovice appears in a document, namely in the register of the Radkov parish. The two early dates thus mark the transition from the acquired farmstead to the settlement documented for the first time.

The historical naming has also been preserved. In his 1836 topography of the Opava region, Faustin Ens additionally referred to Filipovice as “Philippdorf” and “Neudörfel”. For visitors who like to get to know a place through its development and former names, this source adds another perspective from contemporary history. Filipovice thus appears not only as a present-day destination, but also as a settlement with traceable evidence of its origins.

The Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

The Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is also part of the local history. The inhabitants of Filipovice began collecting donations for its construction in 1867. The chapel was probably built between 1902 and 1907; a more precise construction date is not known. What is certain is that it was consecrated in 1907. This cautious dating is an important part of the historical record: the construction history can be narrowed down to a period, but not reduced to a single verified year.

This creates a chronological arc from Filipovice’s beginnings, through the forms of its name in the 19th century, to the chapel at the beginning of the 20th century. Those traveling with children or in a mixed group can use these stops as an opportunity to discover local history not only through dates, but also through specific people, buildings and changes.

On Foot to Maria Talhof

West of Filipovice lies the pilgrimage site of Maria Talhof in a deep valley of the Melčský potok stream. A steep footpath with blue hiking trail markings leads there from Filipovice. The route is therefore not simply a signposted walk; its explicitly described incline makes it a hiking experience in its own right. When planning your day, the main relevant distinction is between the historical tour of the settlement and this steep, marked trail.

The religious significance of the destination is also documented over time: pilgrimages to Maria Talhof have taken place regularly again since the second half of the 1990s. The trail thus connects Filipovice with a place where landscape, the experience of the trail and the tradition of pilgrimage intersect, without these aspects merging into a single attraction.
