Kladno District between remembrance, garden art and industrial history

Kladno District takes you through a landscape where the mining history of Kladensko-Slánsko, old Přemyslid fortifications and an industrial character come together. The attractions range from important memorial sites and historic complexes and museums to gardens, educational trails and distinctive landscapes. This allows you to combine culture, nature and active exploration in a variety of day plans without limiting yourself to just one type of experience.

Lidice: Museum, rose garden and a place of remembrance

The Lidice Memorial offers a permanent museum exhibition as well as a tour through the dignified grounds of the former village. At the Lidice Gallery, you can see the permanent Lidice Collection of modern art; temporary exhibitions are also presented. Another route leads through the present-day village of Lidice and the rose garden, which connects the old and new villages. For self-guided visits, the memorial provides free smartphone audio guides.

The rose garden was established in 1955 as a garden of peace and friendship. It covers 3.5 hectares between the original and newly rebuilt Lidice. With 240 varieties of roses and more than 24,000 rose bushes, it is not only a green addition to the memorial site but also an independent part of the visit. The different sections can be experienced as a tranquil walk through history, art and garden landscapes.

Budeč and Třebíz: Older layers of the region

At Budeč, you can see preserved fortifications and the foundations of the Church of the Virgin Mary. The nave of the Rotunda of St Peter and Paul is considered the oldest still-standing building in the Czech Republic. From the Budeč lookout point, you can look over Kováry and into the valley of the Zákolany stream. This site therefore combines archaeological traces with a direct view of the landscape.

The Třebíz Ethnographic Museum is designed as an open-air museum. It uses village buildings and their furnishings to bring rural ways of life to life. The Cífkův Farmstead in Třebíz also preserves architectural elements from the late 16th century. The visit thus complements the major historical themes with buildings, interiors and regional everyday history.

The Ota Pavel Museum in Buštěhrad presents an exhibition created with relatives, friends, local eyewitnesses and people connected with Pavel’s books. The educational trail about the history of Buštěhrad links historically significant buildings with places associated with the writer Ota Pavel.

Castles, educational trails and mining history

You can visit Lány Castle from April to October. Since 1921, it has served as the official summer residence of the Czech head of state. In the surrounding area, the Lánská Obora educational trail introduces the native flora and fauna of the forest and includes a wildlife observation section. The trail is 4.4 kilometres long and consists of two sections.

The Mayrau Mining Museum preserves an exhibition about the “last working day.” The machinery and equipment are arranged as if the miners had just left their workplace. The museum is a branch of the Sládeček Museum in Kladno. The educational trail about Kladno’s mining history additionally follows former shafts, the outcrop of the main coal seam and the Žraločí zuby natural monument. The historical context remains visible: the route refers to former mines and the region’s industrial past.

Kladno itself also offers a combination of transport history and active travel. Kladno railway station was once an important railway junction for the mining and steel industries. A route from Kladno station uses cycle path 0017 along the present-day railway line. The Kladno area also features a 300-metre-long natural pump track next to cycle path 0017, with easier and more challenging sections.

Water landscapes and regional flavours

Čabárna Water Park consists of ponds, ornamental ponds with water lilies, aquatic plants, domestic animals and free-roaming wildlife. The grounds are designed in the style of a Japanese garden and offer a path along their water areas. This makes it an attraction where gardens, water and wildlife observation can be combined in one manageable visit.

In Slaný, Antoš Brewery relies on Czech hops from the nearby Žatec region and malt from Moravia’s Haná region. The beer is served directly from the lager cellars in Slaný. In addition to museums and landscapes, this gives regional exploration a specific culinary dimension.
