Zichovec – Nature, Kromlech and Local Traditions
Zichovec has an unusually distinctive character: its natural environment, local history and events come together here in different ways. If you are looking for accommodation, you can tailor your stay to the experience you want – whether that means landscapes and water, cultural history, angling traditions or observing the night sky.
Landscape by the Nature Park and Pond
Zichovec lies on the edge of Džbán Nature Park. Zichovecký Pond is located on the southeastern edge of the village. Kingfishers are regularly observed at the pond.
Sport fishing at Zichovecký Pond also follows a particular tradition: it is usually practiced according to the “catch and release” principle. This gives the pond several different ways to experience it – from observing the surroundings to taking part in an activity with established rules. This distinction is useful if you would like to plan your days in Zichovec not solely around sights, but also around your interests.
The Zichovecký Kromlech and Local History
A distinctive cultural landmark is the Zichovecký Kromlech (Kamenný kruh v Zichovci). It was created in 2010 on the outskirts of Zichovec above the pond; construction was completed in May 2010. It is not an original prehistoric structure, but a modern replica of prehistoric stone circles. The kromlech was created as an experimental contribution to research into the purpose of Celtic and pre-Celtic structures. It is precisely this combination of a historical model and modern reconstruction that makes it an unusual subject for exploring the village.
The first surviving written mention of the village dates from 1407. On 18 December 1924, Zichovec became an independent municipality.
Traditions, Fishing and Observing the Night Sky
Each spring, Pálení čarodějnic takes place on the banks of Zichovecký Pond next to the kromlech. This traditional custom connects the distinctive waterside location with a recurring date in the annual calendar. Another established tradition is Zichovecká 24, a 24-hour carp fishing competition at Zichovecký Pond in which teams of two, consisting of a local angler and a guest, compete. This is a clearly defined event format and differs from the usual sport fishing practiced according to the “catch and release” principle.
Hvězdný Zichovec adds a completely different focus. Hvězdný Zichovec is a traditional public event in Zichovec at which the Moon and several deep-sky objects are observed. For families with different interests, the village therefore offers several possible themes: nature by the pond, a modern cultural-historical reconstruction, regional traditions, fishing events or looking up at the sky.
