Zvoleněves: Castle, Church and Sugar Factory
Zvoleněves is a place where several layers of history come together: the history of the castle, sacred architecture, industrial heritage and a distinctive landscape. This allows you to set different priorities when planning your trip – from historical details to quiet relaxation by the pond.
The History of the Castle and the Church
The present-day Zvoleněves Castle was built in 1675 after the castle built in the 16th century was completely burned down, together with the village, during the Thirty Years’ War. The current castle presumably stands on the site of the fortress belonging to the original owners of the estate. This sequence of events makes the castle complex a particularly vivid starting point for understanding the eventful history of the village.
Above the present-day castle, on the hill by the cemetery, a church dedicated to St. Martin was built in 1352. Anna Maria of Tuscany had it extended and fitted with a massive tower in 1745. The façade of St. Martin’s Church was reconstructed, and its windows were also replaced. At the beginning of the 19th century, a covered passageway, resting on three arches and running over the former moat, connected the south wing of the castle with the church. The historical relationship between the castle and the church can thus be traced through several phases of construction.
Traces of the Sugar Industry
The sugar factory is also part of Zvoleněves’s history. Emperor Ferdinand I had the original factory built in 1859 as the owner of the Zvoleněves estate. Sugar production at the Zvoleněves factory ceased at the end of 2001. The main production building of the former sugar factory features tall windows spanning all the floors of the boiling house, architecturally distinctive gables with decorative elements in the form of sugar loaves, and a structure with a water tower. For travelers interested in culture, this industrial heritage adds a distinctly different historical perspective to the history of the castle and church.
Landscape and Further Discoveries
The floodplain of the Knovízský Stream is designated in Zvoleněves as an area with a distinctive landscape character. The pond in Zvoleněves is used for recreation, adding a quieter aspect to the choice of destination. In the surrounding area, between Drnov and Podlešín, the Slaný–Drnov Cold War and Air Defense Museum is located in an underground former command post of the 71st Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade.
Getting There and Choosing Where to Stay
Zvoleněves railway station is a specific reference point for planning your journey. It is located on railway line 110 between Kralupy nad Vltavou and Louny. If you plan to travel by train, you should note that the station does not have step-free access to the platforms.
When searching for accommodation, you can decide what you want to focus on: the castle, church and sugar factory are well suited to cultural and historical research, while the floodplain and pond provide a focus on landscape and relaxation. This keeps your choice of where to stay aligned with your personal travel plans, without assuming any particular accommodation features.
