Slaný: Experience the town’s history and natural monument

Slaný combines an engaging history with a landscape that can be explored along an educational trail. In the historic center, museums, and churches, you will encounter different chapters of the town’s past; on Slánská hora, the trail passes through a protected natural monument with geologically remarkable formations. This allows you to shape your stay around culture, distinctive insights, and an excursion into the countryside.

Town history that remains visible

The Regional Museum in Slaný presents permanent exhibitions on the history of the town and its surroundings. The historic center, which has been an urban conservation area since 1992, provides an appropriate setting for this focus. Particularly striking is the Velvarská Gate: it is the only surviving gate of Slaný’s town fortifications. These fortifications were built in the pre-Hussite period from the end of the 13th century to the beginning of the 15th century.

The Velvarská Gate combines the historic structure with an in-depth exhibition. A new exhibition on the town fortifications was opened there in 2021. Those interested in the town’s development and its visible traces can use this as a concrete way to engage with Slaný’s history, rather than viewing it only through individual buildings.

Churches, astronomy, and a special way to arrive

The Church of the Monastery of the Discalced Carmelites in Slaný offers guided tours in cooperation with the Slaný Information Centre. Individual visits can be arranged for groups. St. Gothard’s Church offers another historical perspective: since September 2021, volunteers from Farní charita Slaný, together with the Roman Catholic parish of Slaný, have ensured public access for personal prayer and visits to this important Gothic monument.

The Jaroslav Trnka Observatory in Slaný takes up a different subject. It focuses primarily on the popularization of astronomy and complements the historic sites with a view of science. During this year’s season, the Cyklohráček excursion train offers a special way to reach Slaný. Its current route runs from Praha-Bubny railway station to the Central Bohemian royal town of Slaný.

Slánská hora: an educational trail through a natural monument

The Slánská hora educational trail runs through the Slánská hora natural monument and its protected area. It begins on Chadalíkova Street and passes a tunnel and a cave. The second viewpoint offers a view of Slaný’s historic center. In this way, the trail creates a clear contrast with the museum, town gates, and churches: the town can be viewed not only through its architectural history, but also from an elevated perspective.

Slánská hora has been protected as a natural monument since February 1, 1998. The aim is to preserve a geological phenomenon at one of the southernmost outcrops of volcanic activity in the České středohoří, associated with characteristic columnar jointing and numerous fissure caves. Columnar jointing refers to the rock’s distinctive column-like structure. When planning your day in Slaný, you can therefore choose between a focus on cultural history and a route through the protected area.
