Discover Velká Dobrá

Velká Dobrá lies in a gently rolling landscape. The built-up area ranges from 395 m above sea level at the western edge to 430 m at the eastern edge. The difference in elevation of 35 metres adds to the impression of gently undulating surroundings. This makes the town a manageable destination where landscape, local history, and several distinctive discoveries come together.

Local History and Historical Traces

Velká Dobrá and Malá Dobrá were merged in 1935. Another historical trace is the Velká Dobrá fort. It was built towards the end of the 15th century and later converted into a granary. The preserved name thus points to a local history in which older structures and later uses meet. The town’s development and the fort’s changing use offer two different ways of approaching the past.

Chapel and Religious Heritage

The Kaple Nalezení svatého Kříže was built in 1765, demolished in 1816, rebuilt in its present form, and consecrated in 1817. The sequence of construction, demolition, rebuilding, and consecration makes its present appearance understandable as the result of several building phases. It is a simple, moderately designed chapel from the first half of the 19th century. Its ground plan corresponds to that of a single-nave church with a right-angled chancel. Mass is celebrated in the Kaple Nalezení svatého Kříže at 11:00 a.m. on the first Sunday of each month. Beside the chapel above the pond stands the Socha sv. Jana Nepomuckého; it was restored in 1969–1970 and installed there.

Cycle Path and Sport

The “Kožová hora – Malé Kyšice” cycle path runs through Velká Dobrá and connects the town with Pletený Újezd, Braškov, Kyšice, Horní Bezděkov, Unhošť, and Malé Kyšice. The sequence of connected towns makes the regional route clear; information boards assist with orientation, while tables and benches provide an opportunity to take a break along the route. Sportovní areál Velká Dobrá offers the rental of a clay tennis court and a multi-purpose court. Thus, in addition to the regional cycle connection, the town provides two clearly different court options for sporting activities.

The Velká Dobrá Burial Mound Field

The Mohylové pohřebiště Velká Dobrá is one of the few burial mound fields in Central Bohemia preserved on a larger scale. There were around 60 burial mounds on an inconspicuous eastern slope; most have been destroyed in the fields, while some have survived in the forest. The southeastern entrance to the Mohylník Velká Dobrá is located at N 50°06'58.30", E 14°04'17.10". Another navigation point is located at Mound No. 23 with a monument at N 50°07'04.29", E 14°04'06.90". The southeastern entrance and Mound No. 23 with its monument therefore form two specific reference points for engaging with the site’s archaeological heritage.
