Tuchlovice – Cycling Route, Churches and Mining History

Tuchlovice combines the history of hard-coal mining with a distinctive spoil heap, a paved cycling route and historic churches. It also has a central park, the Rybník Salakvarda pond and the Záplavy area. If you would like to combine culture, activity and nature on your trip to the Czech Republic, the town offers several different themes for planning your excursions.

Cycling on a Historic Route

The Halda is the spoil heap of the former Tuchlovice mine. It is located directly next to the cycling route and can be reached on foot or by bicycle. From the summit, there is a wide view over the surrounding landscape; a table and benches invite you to rest or take a short break there.

The Cyklostezka Tuchlovice cycling route runs mostly along the track of a former railway branch line that served the Tuchlovice mine. The paved surface is also suitable for inline skating. The route is 6 kilometres long and forms part of cycle route 8185, which runs from Lány to Kamenné Žehrovice railway station. Several places provide access to, or allow you to join, the Cyklostezka.

Churches and Living Tradition

The Chapel of St Florian was built in 1715 by the local landowner Jiří Náprstek. It is dedicated to Saint Florian because Tuchlovice was affected by a cattle epidemic in 1715. The Tuchlovická pouť takes place every year in May in Tuchlovice Square. As a festival, it brings folk dancing, folk music and theatre performances to Tuchlovice and forms part of an annual folk programme.

The Church of St Havel is a single-nave, originally Gothic building dating from around 1330. Only the presbytery with its cross vault has survived from the medieval building. During the Baroque-style remodelling in 1840–1844, a 27-metre-high tower was built above the entrance portal. Its present appearance dates from the rebuilding in 1890, when the sacristy was extended.

Park, Pond and Bird Area

The Rybník Salakvarda pond lies on a field path towards Lány and is fed by the Zámecký potok stream. It is used especially by anglers and walkers, is owned by the municipality and is freely accessible to everyone. In the centre of the town lies the large Tuchlovický park, a peaceful place for sitting or walking that was completely renovated in 2021.

The Záplavy area covers land in the cadastral territories of Tuchlovice and Srby u Tuchlovic. It is an important breeding area and resting place for waterbirds and wetland birds. It therefore complements the historical and active excursion themes with a natural area of its own ecological importance.

Traces of Former Mining

The former JAROSLAV / NOSEK / TUCHLOVICE hard-coal underground mining complex is located in the cadastral territory of the municipality of Tuchlovice. The mining history also includes the Pustinka (Na pustince) ventilation shaft facility. It is located in the cadastral territory of the municipality of Lány, in the immediate vicinity of the Lánská obora game park. The main building of the Pustinka shaft, with its winding tower, is designated as a technical monument.
