Kvílice – Church, Bell Tower and Historic Paths

Kvílice is a destination for travelers who want to discover Czech history through specific buildings, stories and paths. Its landmark is the neo-Romanesque Church of St. Vitus, first mentioned in 1366. The Church of St. Vitus and Its Construction History

The present-day Church of St. Vitus was built after the previous church burned down as a result of a lightning strike in 1884. The new building was constructed in 1886 and 1887 according to plans by Rudolf Štech. The church is designed in the neo-Romanesque style and is also an immovable cultural monument. It therefore combines its role as a landmark of Kvílice with a precisely documented construction history, making the site interesting for visitors interested in cultural history as well.

Bell Tower, Bell and Local Traditions

The wooden bell tower in Kvílice houses a historic bell from 1613. It is probably considered the oldest surviving bell tower in the region. A legend connected with the Church of St. Vitus links its bell to Odolen the Elder Pětipeský of Chýš and Egerburk, who had it made from an alchemical alloy. Kvílice is also documented in literature: the writer Václav Beneš Třebízský mentioned the village in several of his stories.

Mill and Monument at the Well

The Kvílický mlýn mill is located on the western edge of Kvílice. Its courtyard contains a remarkable dovecote. Another example of regional design is the well structure with a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. This monument of a folk character is unusually well preserved in the region and probably dates from around 1800.

Educational Trail and Marked Route

The “Naučná stezka okolím Třebíze” educational trail leads from Kvílice to Třebíz and includes a total of eight stops focusing on the history of both places. For a different type of landscape experience, a marked route runs through the valley of the Bakovský potok stream to Kvílice.
