Discover Pozdeň
Pozdeň combines a long local history with lively traditions, an official cycling route and its connection to the landscape of Džbán Nature Park. If you would like to combine culture, regional festivals and a clearly defined cycling loop, you will find various starting points here for planning your trip. For planning purposes, individual cultural stops, an event date and a longer cycling loop can therefore be considered separately.
Church, Monuments and Local History
The Church of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist is at the heart of the area's history. Jaroslav Plichta of Žerotín had it built in 1289. Between 1847 and 1858, Václav Štraybl of Vrané rebuilt the church in the Baroque style, giving it its present appearance. The church interior also includes the marble high altar, donated to the church by Canon Jan Bernard in 1879. The building's history thus brings together several periods: the construction in 1289 was followed by the Baroque reconstruction, while the marble altar added a later furnishing detail.
Near the centre of the village stands a Baroque sandstone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dating from 1746. It was restored in 1996. The war memorial next to the bus stop by the municipal office commemorates the soldiers who fell in the First World War between 1914 and 1918, as well as the victims of the German occupation from 1939 to 1945. Between 2022 and 2024, it was renovated and enclosed with a new fence.
Traditions Throughout the Year
Every May, local young people organise the Staročeské máje. The event includes a procession of young people in traditional costumes accompanied by musicians, as well as a civic procession attended by visitors from surrounding municipalities and towns. Local SK Slavoj Pozdeň also organises Šibřinky on the second Saturday of every March. The two events take place in different months, making local customs separate seasonal occasions: processions are the focus in May, while Šibřinky take place in March.
Cycling Route and Landscape
The official Route 12–Peruc is 45 kilometres long, starts and ends in Pozdeň, and runs along roads and forest tracks. This provides you with a precisely described circular route for planning purposes, with Pozdeň as both the starting and finishing point. The combination of roads and forest tracks is specific information for planning the loop, as it brings together different types of surface.
Pozdeň is one of the municipalities marking the boundary of Džbán Nature Park. The nature park was designated in 1994 because of its exceptional and well-preserved landscape character. It therefore represents an independent landscape reference alongside the town's cultural sights. Pozdeň can thus be viewed both through its architectural and commemorative heritage and through the Džbán landscape.
Other Special Experiences
Pozdeňské pádlo is a canoeing tournament on the stream that flows through the centre of Pozdeň. The route described ran from the crossroads below the church to a weir and then upstream back again.
For regional orientation, bus route 588 connects Slaný, Srbeč and Milý and serves Pozdeň on weekdays. For further research, you can also explore Dřetovice, Želenice, Žižice, Zákolany, Třebichovice, Zájezd, Hřebeč and Doksy.
