Smečno: Castle, Organ and Natural Monument

Smečno combines medieval traces, musical history and the Smečenská rokle natural monument. The castle, the publicly accessible castle park and the historic church give your stay different cultural focal points; the nearby Smečenská rokle adds opportunities to observe nature.

Castle, park and protected urban history

Smečno Castle dates back to a fortress from the 15th century. Its interior is not accessible to visitors, but Smečno Castle Park is open to the public. The park contains the Sala terrena pavilion, built in 1730 by K. I. Dientzenhofer. The castle and park, together with the historic town centre, belong to the Smečno urban heritage conservation zone. This has been protected since 10 September 1992.

The Church of the Most Holy Trinity also tells the story of several eras. It preserves the presbytery of an originally Gothic building from the 14th century; the rest was created through a Renaissance reconstruction in 1587. The Smečno organ dates from the same year and is considered the oldest organ in Central Europe. In addition to services, it is also used for individual organ concerts. For visitors, the church's architectural history and its musical use come together at this destination as a shared cultural focal point. The 20th Smečenský Organ Festival has also been announced at this church for 2026.

Another historical destination is the tomb of the Clam-Martinic family. The Empire-style burial chapel, built in 1832, stands in the eastern part of the Smečno cemetery in the Kladno District. It served as the burial place of the noble Clam-Martinic family, which owned Smečno Castle.

Military history with special visitor formats

The Sýpka, dating from 1700, stands in the west of Smečno. It houses the artillery museum and is accessible by arrangement with the municipal office. The Vojenský skanzen Smečno also includes a bunker built into the wall of the castle park, which has been restored to its mobilisation condition from September 1938.

Every September, the Vojenský skanzen Smečno organises the Zdeňka Stárka Memorial, featuring full-day dynamic demonstrations of light and heavy military equipment. Smečenská rokle southwest of the town

The Smečenská rokle natural monument is located near Smečno, a sharply incised marl canyon 2 km southwest of the town. The natural monument protects a geological profile of the Džbán Cretaceous Table and calciphilous plant species. In this way, the landscape complements the historical destinations with a distinctly different theme.
