Discover Libušín: Hillfort, Churches and Nature

Libušín combines early medieval history, sacred buildings, landscape and special events to offer a variety of discoveries. At the centre is Libušín Hillfort: a settlement existed on the promontory in the 6th–7th century. The early medieval hillfort had an acropolis and two outer baileys. Covering 12.3 hectares, it is one of the largest promontory forts in Bohemia and is classified as an important archaeological site.

Libušín Hillfort and its Churches

Another prominent site is the large neo-Gothic Church of St Procopius in Libušín. It was built in 1908 primarily for local schoolchildren. The single-nave church has a 32-metre-high tower, eleven cathedral-glass windows and five windows with figurative depictions. Since the consecration of the new Church of St Procopius in 1908, the Church of St George on the hillfort has served as a pilgrimage and cemetery church.

The history of the hillfort also includes an informative and educational trail established in the area. The traditional St George’s pilgrimage takes place here on the Sunday around St George’s Day on 24 April. This is also useful for your planning: the Church of St George and the wooden bell tower open on the last Saturday of each month.

Nature, Cycling and Swimming

Libušín also has a landscape-oriented side. Part of the area lies within Džbán Nature Park; there are also three significant landscape features. One of the designated natural features is Dřín na Hradišti Libušín, a protected commemorative tree first designated on 2 March 2023.

For active days, the Na Závini cycle path is available: it has been completed and is ready for use by cyclists. During the summer months, Jezírko Libušín natural swimming pool can be used for swimming. The Bitva Libušín Historical Festival

The Bitva Libušín historical festival was founded in 1991. During the festival, the historical camp can be visited by the whole family. It presents medieval ways of life and military camp life, the equipment and clothing of the fighters, historical crafts and culture, as well as historical craft products that are displayed or offered for sale. As part of the 33rd Bitva Libušín festival, a combat sports tournament in historical fencing will take place again.
