Vrbičany: Chapel, village history and willows in the valley
Accommodation in Vrbičany
Vrbičany combines a long village history with a distinctive building and a landscape where numerous willows grow. The Chapel of the Holy Trinity, the Easter and Christmas exhibitions, and the location northwest of Slaný give visitors concrete points of interest during a stay. When planning a trip, you can choose between architecture and local history, seasonal traditions, and the valley between Telec and Klobuky as different areas of focus.
A place between Slaný and the valley of willows
Vrbičany lies northwest of Slaný, on the border with the Louny District, at an elevation of 284 metres. Numerous willows continue to grow in the valley from Telec through Vrbičany to Klobuky. If you are more interested in the landscape than in architectural history when planning your trip, this stretch of the valley offers a point of interest in its own right. Vrbičany therefore caters to different interests: the willows in the valley and the village’s historic buildings.
The chapel and architectural ensemble on the village square
The Chapel of the Holy Trinity stands on the village square, on elevated ground above the road. It was built in 1830 as a large chapel with a rectangular floor plan and a simple, tall bell cupola. The floor plan and the upward-reaching cupola give the building two clearly distinguishable architectural features. An iron cross from the second half of the 19th century completes the ensemble in front of the east façade. Both the chapel and the cross are protected. The same architectural ensemble thus brings together the architecture of 1830 and an addition from the second half of the 19th century. If you are interested in local architecture, you can look at the structure’s basic form, bell cupola and the position of the cross.
Local history and seasonal traditions
Vrbičany was first mentioned in 1318, when Vladike Hynek was named. Ownership changed over the centuries, with the Clam-Martinic family being the last owners of Vrbičany. The first mention and the later history of ownership offer different perspectives on the village’s past. A war memorial with a commemorative plaque adds a memorial landmark to the area’s historical points of interest.
Easter and Christmas exhibitions have been held in Vrbičany since 2015. They provide two seasonal points of interest throughout the year. If you want to plan your stay around an exhibition, check the current dates in advance. This lets you plan your trip for your preferred time of year without conflating the exhibitions with the village’s other history.
Getting here and finding accommodation
Vrbičany railway station is on line 110 between Kralupy nad Vltavou and Louny. Check the timetable for your travel date. The station building or passenger shelter is accessible at the station; this does not apply to the platforms. If accessibility is important for your journey, keep this distinction in mind when planning.
When choosing accommodation for a trip to Vrbičany, it helps to decide what you want to focus on first: are you mainly interested in the chapel and the village’s history, or would you rather explore the landscape of willows and the valley? A stay focused on cultural history can be planned around the chapel, memorial and local history; if you are interested in the landscape, the valley and its willows take centre stage.
