Vraný – History, Culture and Landscape in the Vranský potok Valley

Vraný lies in a valley through which two branches of the Vranský potok stream flow. The town combines this distinctive landscape with an unusually dense historic townscape: a château, churches, chapels, statues and a museum tell stories from different eras. History to Discover

A good starting point is the Památník městyse Vraný. It contains a room dedicated to the life and work of Svatopluk Čech, as well as another room devoted to Jaroslav Věšín. The museum also houses documents and archival materials relating to Vraný. It is open as needed and when there is sufficient interest for visitors and tourists, as well as for schools and kindergartens from the surrounding area. This makes it one of the places where a visit is particularly dependent on your own planning and specific interests.

Vraný Château was built between 1785 and 1794 by the Metropolitan Chapter of St. Vitus in Prague as a three-winged Rococo residence with a mansard roof. Today, it houses a social care facility, so access is restricted. A monument to Svatopluk Čech stands in front of the château. The local school adds to this historic setting: Vraný has a documented, demonstrably uninterrupted school tradition spanning 350 years, and the school is one of the town’s notable sights.

Churches, Chapels and the Townscape

The present Church of sv. Jana Křtitele dates from 1751–1761; a church at this site is already mentioned in 1352. The Baroque Church of Narození sv. Jana Křtitele, dating from the 18th century, stands on elevated ground at the western edge of Vraný. Two smaller religious structures add distinctive accents: the Chapel of sv. Rosálie was built in 1812 on the site of an older cross. The Chapel of Nejsvětější Trojice is a late Baroque niche chapel, probably built in 1813.

The statues also make the town’s history immediately visible. Vraný’s square is home to a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, mentioned as early as 1727. In front of the parish house stands a statue of the Virgin Mary described as a Baroque sculptural work, while a statue of Saint Wenceslas stands near the town hall. For a walk through Vraný, this means that historic details can be encountered not only in individual buildings, but also in squares and throughout the townscape.

Gate, Forest and Orientation

Slánská brána is one of the few surviving examples of a stage-like town gate with a side passage for pedestrians. It is the surviving eastern gate of the former Vraný gate system; its Renaissance form was remodeled in the Baroque period and reconstructed in 2004. Slánská brána is freely accessible to visitors. In the vicinity of Vraný, between Vraný and Peruc, there is also a military monument located approximately at the site of an Allied troop review held on 19 August 1813.

Nature enthusiasts will find the Obora mixed forest nearby, which is frequently visited by mushroom pickers. At the same time, Vraný lies outside the network of marked hiking trails. This is important when choosing your own itinerary: the town combines landscape and a connection with nature with cultural sights, but it is not described as a hub of marked hiking trails. For travel through the town, Road II/239 runs east–west; a Class III road crosses Vraný from north to south. Vrbičany railway station lies 2.5 km southwest of Vraný on Line 110 between Kralupy nad Vltavou and Louny.
