History at the Lidice Site

The Lidice site was declared a cultural monument on 3 March 1962 and a national cultural monument by government decree on 16 August 1995. As a result, the history of the place is at the heart of a visit. The multimedia exhibition “And the Innocent Were Guilty...” at the Lidice Museum presents the lives and fates of the residents, the destruction of the village and its reconstruction against the backdrop of important contemporary historical events.

The offerings focus on different aspects: the museum and the Children's Memorial focus on remembrance, the rose garden on plants and space, and the Gallery on art and programmes. This allows visitors to choose different parts of the site according to their interests, without reducing Lidice to just one theme.

The culture of remembrance also includes the Memorial to the Child Victims of the War. It depicts 42 girls and 40 boys murdered in 1942. This site establishes a clear focus and complements the exhibition with its own dimension of remembrance dedicated to children.

Rose Garden Between Old and New Lidice

The Lidice Rose Garden covers 3.5 hectares between the former and the newly established Lidice. It contains 240 varieties of roses and more than 24,000 rose bushes. In addition to its historical themes, Lidice therefore offers a distinctly different area defined by plant diversity and the spatial contrast between the former and newly established Lidice. Its location between the former and newly established Lidice also makes it a separate section of the site, complementing the themes of remembrance with a landscape perspective.

Culture and Programmes at the Lidická Gallery

In addition to cultural programmes, the Lidická Gallery hosts concerts and theatre performances. The International Children's Art Exhibition Lidice is also held there every year. The Children's Gallery on the first floor of the Lidická Gallery is particularly interesting for families: it offers programmes for the youngest visitors.

The interactive educational programme “WHO IS BOB?” takes place at the Lidická Gallery and is aimed at preschool children and children in the first year of primary school. In the educational programme “Building New Lidice” at the Lidická Gallery and Lidice House No. 116, students build prototypes of new Lidice houses. Thus, alongside exhibitions and remembrance, Lidice also offers artistic, playful and practical approaches to the history of the place.
