Beroun District

Beroun District combines river landscapes, extensive forests, castles, medieval urban history and the unusual world of the Bohemian Karst. The Berounsko region lies along the Berounka River, between the forests of Křivoklátsko and the limestone landscape of the Bohemian Karst. This makes the region suitable for a trip combining historic sites, experiences in nature and special places to visit.

Forests, river and protected landscapes

Křivoklátsko is 62% forested; the landscape is predominantly shaped by deciduous and mixed forests. The Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area also includes part of the former Beroun District. The Berounka offers a different type of landscape: The river has a gentle character, is navigable year-round and is considered suitable for beginners.

Castles, urban history and regional traditions

Karlštejn Castle was founded by Charles IV in 1348 to store royal treasures, relics and the imperial coronation jewels. It therefore represents the powerful medieval history of Bohemia. Beroun itself also offers a clearly recognizable historical focus: The city centre is protected as an urban heritage zone and has unusually well-preserved medieval fortifications.

The city’s cultural traditions include the long-established pottery market on the main square, held in spring and autumn. Berounsko’s visitor attractions also include Karlštejn and Křivoklát castles. Those wishing to combine different interests in one trip can therefore choose between urban history, castle visits and regional events.

Caves and industrial history in the Bohemian Karst

The Koněprusy Caves comprise three levels with a total of 2,050 metres of explored passages and chambers. The public visitor route is, at 620 metres, considerably shorter than the entire explored system. The caves are also important protected habitats for bats and greater horseshoe bats.

An open-air industrial museum is being developed at Solvayovy lomy, focusing on the history of limestone quarrying and transport. Visitors can ride a small railway there, see an exhibition about the cableway and enter an underground tunnel. Tours at the Rückl glassworks demonstrate traditional glassmaking techniques, including hand-blown glass.

Pilgrimage site, viewpoints and longer routes

Dům přírody Českého krasu is a visitor centre for the protected landscape area near Zlatý kůň, close to Koněprusy. The site is associated with a former Benedictine monastery and the hermit Ivan. A viewpoint on Svatojánská skála looks out over the monastery complex and the Loděnice valley.

For longer hiking plans, the St. Ludmila Trail offers another perspective: It is approximately 132 kilometres long and consists of 11 stages, three of which lead through Berounsko. This makes it possible to experience the region both through individual destinations and as part of a longer route.
