Discover Králův Dvůr: Castle History, Walking Trails and Family Experiences

Castle History and Baroque Architecture

Králův Dvůr Castle represents a history that combines several construction phases. It was created in the 16th century by rebuilding an earlier stone royal court. The castle acquired its present appearance through a Baroque reconstruction in the second half of the 18th century, probably attributed to Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer. Those interested in historic architecture can distinguish two periods: the rebuilding of the former royal court in the 16th century and the Baroque design of the second half of the 18th century.

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a single-nave Baroque building with a set-off presbytery, a rectangular sacristy and a distinctive tower. The single-nave layout, set-off presbytery, rectangular sacristy and distinctive tower define the church's architecture.

There are no guided tours of the castle. Its interior can be visited during some events or at weddings held in the wedding hall there. Visits to the castle interior are therefore limited to specific occasions. For planning purposes, this means that the castle interior cannot be included as a regular part of the itinerary.

Walking Trails and Geological History

A yellow-marked hiking trail leads from Popovice railway station to Koukolova hora. Koukolova hora is a popular destination for walks; it is also home to the highest-altitude caves in the Český kras. The walk can thus be combined with views of the caves in the Český kras. The excursion combines the marked trail with a destination that is also geologically interesting because of its caves. Popovice railway station serves as the starting point, while the yellow marking indicates the route.

A second geological perspective is offered by the Zahořanský stratotype. It protects a rock exposure of the Zahořany Beds of the Czech Ordovician, with a typical fossil fauna. The protected exposure therefore represents another focus of geological history.

Free Activities for Children

Lanové hřiště Počaply is freely accessible and offers young children swings, slides and various climbing elements. Older children can use rope climbing elements and interactive features, as well as attractions that help develop their balance. When taking a trip with children of different ages, the activities can be chosen according to each child's interests. Age differences matter when making a selection because younger and older children will find different movement-based activities there.

Events in the Castle Grounds

The traditional town celebrations, Městské slavnosti, take place on the summer stage in the grounds of the Baroque castle in Králův Dvůr. Those wishing to combine culture and events will find both in one place within the castle grounds. The summer stage adds an event venue for the town celebrations to the historic site.
