Bykoš – Village History, Český kras and Viewpoints

Bykoš combines a rural settlement structure with traces of landscape and history dating back to prehistoric times. The eastern half of the municipality lies in the southern part of the Český kras Protected Landscape Area. Other features include a preserved village layout, historic buildings, archaeological finds and the Dýňová farma Bykoš.

Landscape in Český kras

Its location in the Český kras Protected Landscape Area shapes an important part of the municipality. The Bykoš cadastral area contains Zones II and III of the Protected Landscape Area. The northern part of the area is home primarily to significant viewpoints. When exploring the area, you can consider the two landscape highlights as spatially separate: the eastern half lies in the southern part of the Protected Landscape Area, while the viewpoints are located mainly in the north of the area. This spatial distribution is particularly useful for orientation: nature and wide-ranging views thus appear as distinct focal points within the municipality.

Clustered Settlement and Preserved Village Character

Bykoš developed as an agricultural clustered settlement with an elongated village green at a crossroads. The original urban structures have been preserved in the village layout and are intended to be maintained and protected. The original character of the buildings has also been largely preserved. Among the village buildings, a farmyard at the southern crossroads stands out. The entrance gates to the farmsteads complement this village character. The village green, southern crossroads and farmsteads together shape the spatial structure of the agricultural clustered settlement. Those interested in the village character therefore consider not only individual buildings, but also their arrangement in relation to the village green and crossroads.

Archaeological Traces from the Neolithic to the Roman Imperial Period

Bykoš is mentioned in writing as early as 1170. The archaeological finds date back even further: they document Neolithic settlement from 5500 to 4300 BC, as well as later sites from the Bronze Age, the Early and Late Iron Ages and the Roman Imperial period. Finds of Linear Pottery culture and Stroke Ornamented Pottery culture, as well as stone tools, have also been discovered. The documented history of the village therefore extends far beyond its medieval mention and encompasses several successive periods. The written mention from 1170 thus marks a medieval stage within a significantly older settlement history.

Pumpkins, Animals and Refreshments at Dýňová farma

Dýňová farma Bykoš offers pumpkins for decoration and carving, as well as edible varieties such as Muscat, butternut and Hokkaido pumpkins. Children can enjoy a billy goat, rabbits, chickens, a bouncy clown and other attractions. At weekends, and during the week by arrangement, refreshments such as pumpkin soup, grilled dishes, pumpkin cake and mulled wine with fruit are available. The farm thus complements the village history and landscape character with a tangible agricultural experience.
