Chrustenice – Nature Park, Mining History and Architecture

Chrustenice combines natural landscapes, mining history and architecture within a compact thematic area. The town borders directly on the Přírodní park Povodí Kačáku. The Chrustenická šachta and Götzova vila add two independent destinations that showcase different aspects of the region’s history.

Natural landscapes between the Kačák and Český kras

Chrustenice borders directly on the Přírodní park Povodí Kačáku. The eastern part of the town lies within this nature park. The nearby Přírodní park Povodí Kačáku is shaped by the Loděnický potok, which is also called the Kačák. The stream provides a habitat for numerous rare animals and protected plants, giving the natural area a distinct landscape character.

In the broader regional setting of Český kras, limestone cliffs, light deciduous forests, steppes and the canyon-like valley of the Berounka alternate. Chrustenice is considered an ideal starting point for excursions into Český kras and Křivoklátsko.

Mining history at the Chrustenická šachta

One particularly distinctive feature of the town is the Chrustenická šachta. It had 84 underground levels extending to a depth of 426 metres. These dimensions give the site an unusual spatial depth and make its mining history tangible not only through exhibits, but also through its underground structure.

Several hundred metres of accessible galleries display exhibits on the history of mining and quarrying in the region. A ride on a mine railway is part of the tour of the Chrustenická šachta. The visit therefore combines the viewing of the galleries, historical information and an underground ride into a coherent experience.

There is also a permanent exhibition about the Amerika–Mořina quarries in front of the entrance to the underground section of the Chrustenická šachta. This makes it possible to explore the subject of mining at several different points: in the underground facility, during the tour and in the exhibition in front of the entrance. The exhibition at the entrance focuses on the Amerika–Mořina quarries, while the exhibits in the accessible galleries document the region’s mining and quarrying.

Götzova vila in Chrustenice

Chrustenice is also home to an architectural landmark, Götzova vila. The building was constructed for an official of the mining district and designed by the prominent Czech architect Jan Kotěra. The villa thus complements the mining history with an architectural perspective on the area surrounding the district.

Götzova vila is located at Chrustenice 52 and dates from 1907–1908. For travel planning, the area can therefore be explored through several different interests: the nature park represents landscapes and protected habitats, the mine shaft represents the history of extraction, and the villa represents the town’s architectural heritage.
