Malá Víska
Malá Víska Between Village History and Landscape
Malá Víska combines a history of small-scale settlement with a landscape that brings together nature observation and historical discovery. The first written record of the village dates from 1520. Malá Víska originally developed as a settlement of woodcutters and charcoal burners who worked in the forests of the Hořovice estate for the Komárovské huti ironworks. This origin in forest work gives the village’s history a clear connection to the use of the surrounding forests. For orientation, the village comprises two parts located about 300 metres apart at an elevation of 552 metres. A stream flows through Malá Víska; it rises at a forest spring called “Belu”, about 300 metres south of the village. The course of the stream adds a specific landscape detail to the history of the settlement.
Jindřichova skála: Rock, Protected Area, and Lichens
A distinctive landscape feature is Jindřichova skála. The rock face is up to 21 metres high and has been designated as a small-scale protected area in the Mittelgebirge. Below the rock face lies a sea of rocks consisting of Cambrian conglomerates. This rock formation adds a geological dimension to the height of the rock face. Jindřichova skála is also home to several endangered lichen species that prefer sunny scree slopes. The rock face, Cambrian conglomerates, and lichen habitats come together here in a natural setting that combines geology and plant life.
Marked Trails and Views of Valdek
From Malá Víska near Hořovice, a marked hiking trail leads to the Jindřichova skála viewpoint. From there, you can look across the valley of the Červený potok to Valdek Castle. Another access route begins at a car park in Neřežín: from there, Valdek can be reached via a marked footpath of less than 2 kilometres. The routes described therefore lead to different focal points: one connects Malá Víska with the viewpoint and landscape, while the other has Valdek as its destination. When planning your exploration, it is therefore important to decide whether Jindřichova skála or Valdek is the main focus.
Valdek Castle Ruins and Historical Traces
Valdek, a castle ruin with archaeological traces, is located in the surroundings of Malá Víska. Valdek was already described as ruined in 1623. The ruin therefore represents an older historical layer of the area, while the history of Malá Víska reaches back to the first written record in 1520. Another historical trace is the CE “Jordán” structure. It was built in 1936, is a prototype building, and has been preserved practically in its original condition. The CE “Jordán” structure thus combines a specific construction date, its status as a prototype building, and its preserved original condition. At the same time, it is an important document of the military history of the Czechoslovak Republic. The historical spectrum of the surrounding area thus extends from the Valdek castle ruins to the military history of the Czechoslovak Republic.
