Zdice – Culture, Knihov and Excursions
Zdice between local history and active excursions
Zdice combines remarkable buildings with a forest park, an educational trail and events that make the town accessible in different ways. This creates a varied mix of culture, activity and discoveries with children for your travel planning. To get there, a direct R16 train service runs from Prague Main Railway Station to Zdice; the journey takes approximately 50 minutes.
Baroque church, town hall and an unusual cinema
In the centre of Zdice, the complex of the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary stands on the main road. The present Baroque church was built in 1747–1749 after the original Gothic church had been demolished. In addition to the church, the protected complex includes the mortuary and the surrounding stone wall. The building therefore dates from the mid-18th century and represents an important historical landmark in the town.
The town hall also offers a detail for a cultural and historical exploration: it is listed as an immovable cultural monument, and its cellar contains preserved Gothic barrel vaults. The Gothic barrel vaults in the cellar set the town hall apart architecturally from the Baroque church and the Cubist cinema. The cinema in Zdice at Zahradnà 481 provides a completely different architectural accent. This cultural monument is a unique building in the spirit of Cubist architecture. It was built in 1926–1927 based on a design by Jaroslav Pouch and Václav Zazvonil, features Rondocubist decoration and bears a sculpture by Vlastimil Amort on its main façade.
History and memories in Zdice
The Army Museum Zdice is located on the grounds of the former Zdice barracks on Čs. armády Street. Its exhibition presents the military history of the 20th century, with a focus on the Second World War and military technology. The museum thus complements the town's architectural history with a look at the political and technological past of the last century.
Poncarovy Zdice is also part of the town's cultural identity. Founded in 1999, this cultural event commemorates the composer and conductor Josef Poncar with a brass-band concert; the residents of Zdice take part in it. If you would like to combine regional traditions with local history, this event offers a distinctive cultural highlight.
Knihov, activities and options for a day with children
Knihov Hill was transformed into a forest park in 1923. The Lesopark Knihov educational trail contains twelve exercise elements; in addition, Tyršova stezka offers tasks for children. Together, the two activities give a stay in the countryside a concrete focus on movement and discovery. The Zdice swimming pool complex also includes a children's playground and a beach sports area.
Those who would like to explore Zdice actively can make a note of Hájemstvà zelené. The event is a hiking and cycling tour held in the second half of April. For further searches for suitable places in the same area, see: Hýskov, Osek, Bykoš, Podbrdy, Železná, Všeradice, Zajecov and Tlustice.
