Discover Beraun: City History, Nature Trails and the Berounka

Beraun lies on the Berounka River and combines a historic town center with nature trails, connections to nature and a pottery tradition. The town therefore offers several clearly distinct points of interest for planning your trip: city history, trails of varying lengths, information about flora and fauna, and regularly recurring markets. Town Center, Walls and Ceramics

Beraun’s historic town center was declared an urban heritage zone in 1992. Large sections of the fortifications have been preserved; as a result, Beraun is one of the Czech towns with the best-preserved city walls. The town’s historical character can be complemented by a visit to the traditional Beraun pottery markets, which take place three times a year. Anyone wishing to include the pottery markets should plan their stay around one of the three annual dates. The Beraun Pottery Museum has a functional ceramics workshop with a potter’s wheel and kiln.

Nature Trails with Different Focal Points

At the northern edge of Beraun, the Václav Talich Nature Trail offers a 7 km blue route lasting approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes, as well as a shorter 3.5 km green route. The two distances provide a concrete guide for planning your day. The trail also has 14 stations covering the local flora, including rare plant species, the diverse fauna with a focus on birdlife, the valley’s geological features and places associated with Václav Talich.

The Ostrý Nature Trail has its own focus on natural history. It is three kilometers long and has ten information boards, four of which are educational boards with interactive elements. In terms of content, the trail provides information about the local flora and fauna. Comparing the two routes, the difference is therefore not limited to their length: the Václav Talich Nature Trail combines several subject areas, while Ostrý focuses on the local natural environment.

Natural Environment and Bear Enclosure in Beraun

Two clear geographical features characterize Beraun: the town lies on the Berounka and on the border of the Český kras Protected Landscape Area. If you would like to give nature and culture different weights, you can take these features into account separately when planning your trip. Bear Kuba lives in the bear enclosure on Městská hora. The bear enclosure is freely accessible all year round; visiting it is therefore not tied to a particular season. This allows you to include historical impressions, ceramics, knowledge of nature and a visit to the bear enclosure in your personal selection.
