Velký Chlumec: Memorial Oak, Wildlife Rescue Station and Trails
Velký Chlumec combines distinctive natural monuments, animal care and trails with different themes. Those looking for a place for shared discoveries will find specific points of interest here: a centuries-old oak, guided tours of a wildlife rescue station, family-oriented events and a lookout tower in the surrounding area.
Chlumecký dub Natural Monument
Velký Chlumec is home to the protected Chlumecký dub memorial oak. It is estimated to be 300 years old and 25 metres tall; these values were recorded in 2010. The tree gives the place a special connection with nature and is a reason in its own right to consider Velký Chlumec when planning a trip not only as a starting point for further trails, but also as a destination with its own history.
Discover Wildlife
The Záchranná stanice pro volně žijící živočichy Velký Chlumec offers guided tours of its grounds. The tours focus on individual animal patients and the protection of endangered species. The tour lasts approximately one hour and requires advance booking. In addition, educational programmes are available for kindergartens, primary schools and secondary schools. They cover wild animals, human-caused dangers, treatment and care, as well as the return to nature. In this way, a visit offers not only a nature experience but also a clear insight into the work of a wildlife rescue station.
Trails and Shared Experiences
On 6 June 2026, Velký Chlumec hosted a children's day for children and their parents. A 3.5-kilometre forest trail between Velký Chlumec and Malý Chlumec was used for the event. Along the trail, there were stations with tasks involving fruit and vegetables; the route was designed for children of all ages and their parents. The specific length of the forest trail helps you fit the outing into your daily schedule. The 3.5 kilometres provide a clear spatial framework for the shared outing, with movement and tasks involving fruit and vegetables forming part of the same experience.
The blue Podbrdský-Čtyřlístek field trail – the southern trail or Chlumec Trail – leads to several sights. These include Velký Chlumec with the Chapel of Saint Ludmila. On this route, the field trail, the village and the chapel stand alongside one another as different points of reference. The trail thus offers another way to include the village in an exploration with several stops, without reducing Velký Chlumec to a single attraction.
Studený vrch Lookout Tower
The Studený vrch lookout tower stands in the surroundings of Velký Chlumec. It was built in 1942, is 17.5 metres high and offers views towards Prague, Karlštejn and the Brdy ridges. From Velký Chlumec, the lookout tower can only be reached on foot or by bicycle. The car must be left in the forest before continuing the ascent on foot. You should take this feature into account if the lookout tower is part of your outing plan. The final section therefore also matters when planning: after leaving the car, you continue the ascent on foot, while the tower opens up views towards Prague, Karlštejn and the Brdy ridges.
