Tmaň between Castle, History and Karst

Tmaň lies in a small hollow southwest of Beroun on the edge of the Český kras Protected Landscape Area. The town combines historic buildings with a karst landscape where cultural history and encounters with nature can be explored along a variety of routes. If you are planning a trip with a range of discoveries, you will find both distinctive buildings in the town and an educational trail with stations, information boards and protected landscape features.

Castle and Early History

The castle in Tmaň is a three-winged, three-storey building. Its façade is articulated with Rococo elements, making it a distinctive historical landmark of the town.

Outside the village, St. George’s Church stands alone at a crossroads and is surrounded by a cemetery. Archaeological finds show that its site was an ancient place of worship at the centre of an extensive burial ground; its origins date back to the Bronze Age. The site therefore tells not only the story of the church, but also points to a much older history of settlement and ritual.

The painter M. Aleš was also connected with Tmaň. He visited the castle between 1909 and 1912, found there the landscape of his old age and drew several pictures of Tmaň.

Karst Landscape and Educational Trails

The Koukolova hora–Kotýz–Koněprusy educational trail begins in Slavíky near Tmaň. The 5.2 km hiking route includes 13 stations and information boards. The fixed route length gives the hike a clear framework, while the 13 stations structure the discoveries along the way. It leads over Koukolova hora, with the niche chapel of Saint Blaise and a former limestone quarry.

The niche chapel was commissioned in 1832 by Antonín Karel Mudroch, then rector of Charles University and owner of the Tmaň estate. It was fully restored in 2010; on older maps, it was marked as a ruin. The chapel thus combines a historic date of construction with a later change in its state of preservation.

Around Tmaň, the educational trail leads from Slavíky to the Kotýz National Nature Monument. The landscape there is shaped by significant karst formations as well as protected flora and fauna of the rocky steppes. A yellow-marked hiking trail also leads from Králův Dvůr-Popovice railway station on Line 170 from Prague to Pilsen up to Koukolova hora and continues to the Koněprusy Caves.

In Tmaň, a Gothic portal has been preserved in a single-storey building with a small tower; the building is awaiting reconstruction. The cross and bell tower by the pond were erected in 1899. Together with the castle and St. George’s Church, these provide several distinct starting points for planning a trip centred on local history, sacred architecture and the karst landscape.
