Zaječov – Svatá Dobrotivá and Brdy

Zaječov looks both toward Svatá Dobrotivá in the village centre and toward the Brdy landscape. The Augustinian monastery and cycle route 2252 give the village two distinct focal points: cultural history and active exploration. The route leads through Zaječov and onward into the Brdy Protected Landscape Area. Monastery and traces of history

Svatá Dobrotivá was founded in 1262 by Oldřich Zajíc z Valdeka. The main altar of the monastery church features the Rococo painting “The Virgin Mary's Plea to Oldřich z Valdeka”. J. P. Molitor completed the painting in 1745. The monastery church therefore offers a specific art-historical point of reference within the village. The foundation in 1262 and the painting from 1745 provide two distinct chronological reference points.

Upper Zaječov adds further details to this picture. A chapel was built there before 1800; original wooden buildings featuring folk architecture have also been preserved. Another historical detail is the 52nd Battalion of Technical Auxiliary Troops: it included a company consisting mainly of members of religious orders. The chapel, wooden buildings and battalion each represent different historical aspects.

Cycling, hiking and finding your way in Brdy

Cycle route 2252 leads through Zaječov and into the Brdy Protected Landscape Area. For trips with children, a less-travelled variant of this route is considered safer. This distinction is relevant when planning a family outing if you want to choose your route more cautiously.

If you prefer travelling on foot, the hiking route “Along the Log Houses Beneath Brdy” leads to Zaječov. For planning cross-country skiing destinations, an up-to-date map of cross-country ski trails in the Brdy Protected Landscape Area and Podbrdsko is also available. This allows you to consider the winter-related activities in the wider area separately from the village's cultural and hiking themes. Cycling, hiking and winter cross-country skiing thus represent different forms of physical activity. The immediate surroundings of Zaječov include the Zřícenina Valdek ruins and the mountains of Beran, Hejlák and Hřeben. Mount Hlava is also located in the surrounding area. Further afield in the region are the Týřov ruins and the Church of Svatý Martin; the Church of U Svatého Petra is also located near Zaječov. These destinations include religious buildings, ruins and landscape features. The transition from the village centre into the surrounding area combines architectural history with experiences in the landscape without equating the two themes.
