An informative way to get to know the landscape is offered by the Svatojánský okruh educational trail. The circular route is 4 km long and includes 11 stations. It begins at the monastery in Svatý Jan pod Skalou and leads via a steep ascent to the “U kříže” viewpoint on Skála. The route then runs through the karst canyon of the Kačák (Loděnice) stream and reaches the limestone formation known as “kozí hřbety”. The 4 km and 11 stations give the educational trail a clear structure: landscape, views and geology can be combined in a compact circuit and considered as one connected exploration when planning an outing.

The Cesta Vojty Náprstka hiking trail also reaches the pilgrimage site of Svatý Jan pod Skalou after the first ascent. It therefore complements the Svatojánský okruh with another hiking connection to the village; the first ascent becomes a clearly defined section of the route planning.

The route also includes a visit to the nearby Solvayovy lomy open-air museum. Its offerings include a limestone-mining museum, a ride on a narrow-gauge railway and a visit to a mine tunnel. The Svatojánský okruh thus connects trail stations, geological formations and the history of limestone mining without requiring you to focus on just one theme.

Monastery, Church and Museum

The Benedictine monastery has stood in Svatý Jan pod Skalou for almost 1,000 years. The historic villagescape also includes the Church of the Nativity of St John the Baptist, an early Baroque building erected in 1661 by the architect C. Lurago. A powerful karst spring rises beneath the rock near the cave of St Ivan.

The cave of St Ivan is accessible from the church. It lies in an original karst-like travertine cave in the rock and is marked by the portal of an old Renaissance Church of the Virgin Mary. A visit therefore leads not only into a rock formation, but also to a place where religious and architectural history intersect.

The Svatojánské Museum is housed in a historic former school building belonging to the municipality, dating from 1822. The permanent exhibition is devoted to the history of the municipality. The museum also preserves a 19th-century embroidery collection belonging to the local Berger noble family.
