Praskolesy between Village History and River Landscapes

Praskolesy was first mentioned in 1216. The built-up area of Praskolesy is classified as a Category UAN I archaeological area and includes a village, a settlement and a burial site dating from the Middle Ages to the modern era. It also contains churches, chapels and parish buildings from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Historic buildings can be found in the centre of Praskolesy, on the village square and at a bridge over the Červený potok. Church, Chapels and Baroque Buildings

The Church of Saint Nicholas stands on a slight rise in the centre of the village, south of the village square. Its foundation stone was laid in 1620, and it was completed in 1710. South of the church is the Chapel of Saint Procopius. It has a rectangular floor plan with a three-sided termination, Gothic windows and a Gothic portal. Inside are a statue of Saint Procopius from the late 14th century, wall paintings by J. Scheiwl and the burial places of deans of the Karlsteiner Chapter. A covered staircase leads along the northern side of the church slope to the cemetery wall; at its foot stands a cast-iron memorial cross on a stone pedestal.

On a small island in the middle of the village square stands the Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk, a small late Baroque building from 1832. A statue inside it is dated 1758 on its pedestal. The historic villagescape is complemented by the Praskolesy Deanery, a Baroque building from the late 17th century that was formerly the seat of a dean of the Karlsteiner Chapter. It is located in the northwestern part of the municipality at a bridge over the Červený potok. The two-storey Baroque parish house from the first quarter of the 18th century is located northeast of Saint Nicholas Church; a spacious garden extends to the south and southeast of it.

Water, Floodplain Forests and Marked Hiking Trails

The landscape features include the significant Červený potok watercourse with riverside and accompanying greenery, a valley floodplain landscape with floodplain forests, ponds and wetlands, as well as the adjacent wooded slopes. Koupaliště u skály is a functioning combined local biocentre covering 5.4 hectares. It includes a former swimming pool, ponds, an ash-alder floodplain forest and woodland with rock outcrops above the right bank of the watercourse. The LBK.55-56 Červený potok biocorridor is predominantly functional, 1,290 metres long and covers 3.6 hectares.

The blue-marked hiking trail through Praskolesy follows the route Žebrák–Chlustina–Praskolesy–Otmíče–Lochovice. The green-marked hiking trail touches only part of the southern tip of the Praskolesy cadastral area at the Pohodnice farmstead.
