Chynava: Cultural History and Hiking Trail

Chyňava combines cultural history with a thematic hiking trail and several memorial sites. Church, Mining History and Historical Memorials

St. Procopius Church in Chyňava is dedicated to the patron saint of miners and recalls the iron mining that took place near Chyňava from the Middle Ages onward. It was first mentioned in writing in 1396. The original Gothic church was rebuilt in the Baroque style from 1779 to 1782; in 1914, an extension and a new tower gave it its present appearance. Its furnishings include a historic bell cast by Master Bartoloměj in 1518. It is considered the second-oldest bell in the region and weighs 350 kg.

Further historic sites complement this picture. The Chapel of St. Florian was first mentioned in writing in 1854 and renovated in 2012. The new cemetery in Chyňava was established in 1857 and became the final resting place of 32 Italian immigrants during the First World War. The Chyňava First World War Memorial commemorates 46 local men and young people who lost their lives in the war. The remarkable winter lime tree was planted on March 24, 1854, is 16 meters tall and has a circumference of 340 cm. Its shade provides a place to sit for churchgoers and cemetery visitors.

A Hiking Trail with a Special Historical Background

The 14.5 km-long Stezka česko-italského přátelství commemorates the forced stay of people from South Tyrol in Bohemia between 1915 and 1919. At the same time, it connects to existing marked hiking trails. The trail thus combines a specific chapter of local and regional history with a longer hiking option.
