Nižbor: Castle, Celts and Glassmaking

Nižbor combines medieval history, Celtic heritage, glassmaking and landscapes within a compact thematic area. This creates a destination where different interests can be combined: Nižbor Castle offers an introduction to the history of the town, the Celtic oppidum of Stradonice provides insights into prehistory, and the Rückl glassworks showcases a craft tradition that remains tangible to this day.

Nižbor Castle and Celtic history

Nižbor Castle was built in the mid-13th century on a rocky spur above the confluence of the Berounka and the Habrový potok stream. It is an immovable cultural monument. King Přemysl Otakar II is considered a possible builder. The castle therefore provides a tangible starting point for anyone wishing to combine their stay with medieval architecture and Bohemian history.

The castle is also home to the Information Centre of Celtic Culture. It is open every year from May to November and uses multimedia projections to present the Celts’ migrations through Europe, their religion, craftsmanship and everyday life. A visit complements the visible historical sites with explanations of their way of life and culture.

The Stradonice oppidum is also part of the Celtic theme. It covered approximately 90.3 hectares and was probably divided into an acropolis and an outer settlement. The remains of the fortifications, which were rebuilt twice, have survived only in fragments. Celtic settlement shaped the area around the oppidum around 500 BC; the site was probably an important centre of trade and production in Central Europe at that time. The two sites lead into periods that are far apart: the castle was built in the mid-13th century, while Celtic settlement shaped the area around 500 BC.

Rückl glassworks and practical experiences

The Rückl glassworks focuses on a distinctly different aspect. Guided tours explain individual production processes and traditional glassmaking techniques. At Rückl, you can also purchase an experience at the glassworks or glass-cutting experience in the factory shop. The guided tour and glass-cutting offer different forms of experience: one involves observing production processes, while the other involves hands-on craftsmanship. The entire Rückl glassworks site is accessible to people with disabilities.

Landscape and hiking trail

One location in the municipality of Nižbor lies within the Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area. The protected landscape therefore provides another thematic point of reference alongside the cultural monuments. For orientation on a hike, a red-marked trail is described particularly clearly: it leads from Beroun via Zdejcina, Stradonice and Nižbor to Roztoky and Křivoklát. This allows you to incorporate Nižbor into a longer hiking route rather than viewing the town only as an individual cultural destination.
