Bubovice amid limestone, forests and small discoveries

Bubovice offers an unusual combination of nature, regional history and manageable day-trip destinations. The village lies in the surroundings of the Bohemian Karst and is suitable for planning a trip in which paths, landscapes and culture are closely intertwined. This is particularly evident at the Skanzen Solvayovy lomy open-air museum, in the woodland landscapes of the Karlštejn National Nature Reserve and in the historical traces found in Bubovice itself.

Experience limestone and compare routes

The Skanzen Solvayovy lomy open-air museum focuses on limestone extraction and transport in the Bohemian Karst. It was established in a disused limestone quarry known by the names “U Paraplete” and “Na stydlých vodách”. From Bubovice, a level route of about 2 kilometres takes roughly 20 minutes to reach it. The beginning is marked as a yellow hiking trail with a hammer symbol, after which a field path leads to the quarry.

Another destination is the Dendrologická stezka Bubovice dendrological educational trail. The approximately 1.5-kilometre gravel path from Bubovice to the trail offers its own point of reference for planning. The educational trail has one station and is designed for a visit lasting about one hour. The different route lengths and visiting times help distinguish between short and more extensive itinerary items without equating the two destinations.

Woodland landscapes, karst and distinctive natural sites

The cadastral area of Bubovice also lies within the Karlštejn National Nature Reserve. This extensive woodland landscape is divided by the valleys of the Budňanský, Bubovický and Loděnice streams. It also contains geological profiles, palaeontological sites, as well as above-ground and underground karst formations. In 2000, the reserve received the Council of Europe Diploma for Protected Areas; the award was reconfirmed in 2020.

Nearby, in the Čeřinka quarry, lies Arnoldka, which at 111 metres below the surface is considered the deepest known cave in Bohemia. Also nearby, the Bubovický stream features cascade-like waterfalls. They can be particularly impressive in winter, spring or after rainfall; in dry years, they may remain without water for longer periods. The Bubovice Waterfalls are most easily reached from Srbsko via the blue-marked hiking trail.

Cultural monuments and living traditions

The historical traces in Bubovice include the ruins of the Chapel of St Adalbert. They are considered a notable example of small-scale sacred architecture in Bohemia and were declared a cultural monument in 2016. The builder was the Svatojánský abbot Emilián Koterovský; he commissioned Kryštof Dientzenhofer to design and build the chapel. When choosing a place to stay, this cultural focus complements the nature and limestone themes with a tangible insight into the region’s architectural history.

The Bubovický Oak likewise connects nature and local history. The 240-year-old pedunculate oak is 20 metres tall and has a trunk circumference of 375 centimetres; these figures were measured in 2009. It was designated a memorial tree as early as 1986. Traditional events in Bubovice also include the children’s masked carnival Maškarní karneval pro děti and the witch-burning celebration Pálení čarodějnic.

Wetlands and the seasons

Below Bubovice, in the floodplain of the Bubovický stream, lies an area of peatland restoration within the Český kras Protected Landscape Area and the Karlštejn National Nature Reserve. The wetland is intended to function as a periodic habitat: it may fill with water after autumn rains, spring snowmelt or heavy rainfall, while it may dry out completely during drier periods. The restoration expands a habitat suitable for the life and reproduction of amphibians. As a result, nature observation around Bubovice gains an explicitly seasonal dimension.
