Náchod District – Rocks, Cultural Landscape and Trails

Rocks, Cultural Landscape and Trails in Náchod District

In Náchod District, you will find impressive rock landscapes, literary-inspired cultural landscapes, castles and monastic complexes. When planning your trip, you can choose between nature experiences, guided tours, interactive exhibitions, and marked cycle and hiking trails. Particularly characteristic is the combination of protected landscapes and cultural sites, each of which offers a different way to explore.

Nature Experiences with Different Ways to Visit

The Adršpašsko–Teplické Rocks are considered the largest and wildest rock town in Central Europe. Visiting Adršpach Rock Town is possible year-round; in winter, the sightseeing trail is maintained as far as the Great Waterfall. The railway station is located directly in front of the entrance to Adršpašské skály, and there is also a bus stop about 250 metres from the entrance.

In Babiččino údolí, an educational trail leads for seven kilometres and includes 25 stops. The cultural landscape preserves a harmonious combination of remnants of natural vegetation and part of the château grounds associated with Božena Němcová’s “The Grandmother”. The Bathildina Trail connects the château grounds in Ratibořice with Babiččino údolí. This allows you to experience cultural sites and the landscape as part of one continuous outing, without mixing the individual themes.

Those looking for marked trails will find the highest peak of the Broumovské stěny rock wall at Božanovský Špičák: it reaches 773 metres and has a marked circular trail. At Hvězda stands the Baroque Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows, built according to a design by Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer. An important seasonal distinction should be noted when planning: the trails in Broumovské stěny and on Ostaš are not maintained in winter; access is at your own risk.

Castles, Monastery and Historic Sites

A tour of Ratibořice Château is arranged as a guided tour and lasts approximately 45 minutes. Texts in foreign languages are available, while the exhibition on the ground floor is accessible. The specific way of visiting therefore differs from a freely accessible landscape trail. The Baroque appearance that Klášter Broumov has today was created in the 17th century. The medieval monastic scriptorium offers interactive tours. The monastery garden is open to the public free of charge.

The Dobrošov fortress complex also adds a clearly recognisable military-historical dimension to the district’s cultural profile. It comprises three completed bunkers and 56 other objects. In Nové Město nad Metují, the château garden recalls Italian Baroque gardens while also containing Art Nouveau elements. Thus, different historical periods are represented within the same destination: Baroque sacred architecture, military structures, château culture and designed gardens.

Cycling Between Places and Landscapes

For active days, the regional cycle network is marked on the ground and equipped with information boards and rest areas. Cycle Route 4036 runs mainly along paved field and forest roads; some sections follow Class III roads. The 31-kilometre Dolní Metuje route connects Josefov, Peklo and Náchod. These different route characteristics help you distinguish between a more landscape-oriented route and a connection linking several places.

Around Adršpašské skály, the railway station and bus stop are useful points of reference. Other activities involve guided indoor tours, freely accessible garden areas or marked trails. The desired mix of culture and nature is therefore a more useful selection criterion than a blanket classification of the entire district.
