Discover Zdoňov: Culture, Nature and Cross-Border Routes

Zdoňov offers travelers an unusual mix of culture, striking stone formations, hiking and cycling trails, as well as cross-border opportunities. Options range from historic churches and a 25 km cycling loop to nature experiences around Křížový vrch and regional cuisine.

Culture among the church, pilgrimage complex and stones

The Church of the Most Holy Trinity and its cemetery complex are protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. The church was first mentioned as a parish church in 1384 and extensively rebuilt in the Renaissance style at the end of the 16th century, probably based on designs by the architect Carlo Valmadi.

On a hill at the northwestern edge of Zdoňov stands the Baroque Church of Our Lady, surrounded by a cemetery. The pilgrimage complex also includes the Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk. The Church of Our Lady replaced a small wooden chapel in 1667 and was closed in 1786 during the Josephine reforms.

Above Zdoňov lies Kamenný kříž with its druid grove. The stone complex consists of 13 stones, the tallest of which reach 4 to 4.5 meters. The adjacent druid grove consists of 12 oaks and 8 birches. From Křížový vrch, you can reach Kamenný kříž via the chapel and Svatý kopeček along a trail.

Cycling and hiking routes around Zdoňov

The Teplice nad Metují–Zdoňov/Loděnice–Mieroszów–Meziměstí–Vernéřovice–Teplice nad Metují cycling loop runs from Teplice nad Metují via the red cycle route 4036 to Zdoňov and then via route 4020 to Meziměstí. The entire route is 25 km long and has a medium difficulty level.

A hike from Zdoňov leads through the Druid Grove to the ruins of the Church of Our Lady on Kopeček. Another route through Zdoňov runs through Hrnčířské údolí past the Zdoňov menhirs. This art project is dedicated to the animal world: each stone represents a different animal as well as a different force or element.

Nature, views and regional cuisine

The Křížový vrch viewpoint is accessible year-round and lies outside the paid tour of the Adršpašské skály. A rock city lies in the Křížová cesta nature reserve on Křížový vrch, where protected birds, including peregrine falcons, nest.

The Kovářova kobyla restaurant in Zdoňov serves seasonal dishes made from regional ingredients. For visits to Poland, the Zdoňov–Łączna border crossing can be used. From Buková hora, a route leads along a cycle path to the border crossing and onward into the border village of Zdoňov, continuing to the town center and the church.
