Česká Metuje – Metuje Valley and Sandstone Columns

Metuje Valley and Pískovcové sloupky

The Pískovcové sloupky natural monument lies on the left bank of the Metuje in the immediate vicinity of the built-up area of Česká Metuje. It is a remarkable geological formation created by karstification and selective weathering in more calcareous Upper Cretaceous sediments. The natural monument includes hourglass-shaped sandstone-like rock columns on the wall of an artificial exposure. It also includes a geomorphologically notable scree slope with rock outcrops, as well as communities of near-natural forests and rocks.

The first surviving written mention of the village of Metuje dates from 1406. At that time, Metuje was part of the Police estate. The settlement's name also refers to the Metuje River. Another trace can be found on the road to Police: the “Smírčí kříž” reconciliation cross stands there on the left. The cross has a Greek shape and bears an inscription.
