Frymburk Castle on a rocky spur

The ruins of Frymburk Castle form a two-part castle complex on a high rocky spur near Nový Hrádek. The rocky spur is encircled by the Olešenka River, giving the complex its clearly recognizable topographical setting. The castle is also known as Frimburk and was in use from the 14th to the 17th century. Its history can be seen particularly clearly in a distinctive structural feature: the irregularly shaped round tower is approximately 18 metres wide, while the masonry is up to 4 metres thick.

This creates a different focus for trip planning than a destination dedicated solely to views. Frymburk represents the combination of a castle complex, rocky spur, and medieval architectural history. If your group has different interests, you can mentally connect this historic site with the landscapes and viewpoints around Šibeník without suggesting that the two destinations offer the same experience.

Rozhledna na Šibeníku and the views

The Rozhledna na Šibeníku lookout tower is 47 metres high, with its observation platform at a height of 32 metres. The tower is accessible year-round from sunrise to sunset, and admission is free.

Practical information about getting there is also clearly provided. A car park is located near the Tourist Information Centre at Šibeník, 200 metres from the lookout tower. There are also the Nový Hrádek-škola and Nový Hrádek-náměstí bus stops, as well as a marked footpath from Nový Hrádek square. This allows you to incorporate the lookout tower into your plans from different arrival directions without restricting the town’s other destinations to a single route.

The Stations of the Cross on Šibeník complement the tower with a walking and landscape perspective. At first, the route offers views of the Orlické Mountains and the Olešenka Valley. At the end of the route, the view extends to the Giant Mountains. This change between the nearer landscape and the broader horizon is precisely what distinguishes the Stations of the Cross from the elevated viewpoint of the observation platform.

The square, the Marian Column, and the church

A late Baroque sandstone Marian Column stands in Nový Hrádek square. It is approximately 6 metres high and bears a statue of the Virgin Mary dating from 1747. In May 1958, the column was designated a protected cultural monument. This makes it one of the details that you can appreciate during your stay not only as a decorative element of the square, but also as an independent historical and cultural landmark.

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul stands on the northwest side of the square. Its interior contains furnishings from several historical periods and styles, from the early Baroque to the present day. The side altar of Saint Joseph dates from the late 17th century. Together with the Marian Column, it creates a cultural focal point in the square that clearly differs from the scenic views of Šibeník and the Frymburk castle complex.
