Vlkov – Village History, Pond and Mountain Views

Vlkov reveals its character not through a single attraction, but through the interplay of rural architecture, open landscape views and unusual historical traces. The original, tasteful rural buildings are a major influence on the appearance of the village. On the village square, the “Vlkov Gates” also stand out as a characteristic element of the local architecture.

Historical Traces in the Village Landscape

One of the notable memorial sites is the Vlkov War Memorial. It dates from 1929 and bears the names of 18 victims of the First World War and two victims of the Second World War. It therefore refers both to local history and to the different periods to which the memorial is dedicated.

A special architectural rarity is the polygonal barn. This multi-sided building is the last surviving polygonal barn in the Hradec Region. It is occasionally accessible; this limited opportunity to visit it distinguishes it from a permanently open part of the village landscape. For travel planning, this means that the barn should be regarded as a special discovery that is not always possible to visit, without assuming fixed opening hours.

Crosses and the History of Surveying

In the meadows north of Vlkov stands a monolithic sandstone cross known as a reconciliation cross. After it was found in 1993, it was re-erected approximately 50 metres from its original location. The present site is therefore part of the traditional history of this cross, but it is not the original location.

South of the village, in a field near the road to Hradec Králové, stands a military triangulation pylon. The Vlkov Pylon is part of the Josefovská trigonometrical network from 1874 and one of a total of three surviving points in this network. This makes it an independent destination for anyone interested not only in village history but also in historical surveying and technical monuments.

Pond and Views

The “V Lužinách” pond lies on the edge of the village. It is suitable for walks and nature observation, complementing the cultural and historical sites with a landscape experience. The eastern side of Vlkov offers a view of the Orlické Mountains. To the north, the view is approximately bounded by the well-known panorama of the Krkonoše Mountains. Thus, the character of the village includes both immediate views of the rural surroundings and more distant mountain vistas.

Places to Eat in Vlkov

Hospůdka Pod Lipami is a visitor-oriented pub in Vlkov. It offers three types of beer, homemade lemonades and coffee. The menu includes simple dishes such as pizza, marinated Hermelín cheese, pickled sausage, sausage and rollmop herring. In summer, an outdoor seating area is also available. This means that, alongside its historical and landscape impressions, the village also offers a documented opportunity for a casual meal or refreshment.
