Broumov: Culture, Hiking and Special Discoveries
Broumov combines remarkable cultural monuments with a landscape that can be explored on marked trails. This gives you a diverse range of travel options: historic buildings, a museum, a monastery tour accessible year-round, nature in the CHKO Broumovsko Protected Landscape Area and a route that starts directly at the Old Town Hall.
Cultural monuments with unusual details
The Broumovsko Museum has six halls with a permanent exhibition. The Church of St. Peter and Paul in Broumov is another historical landmark: its tall square tower was built in 1477.
The cemetery church of the Virgin Mary stands on the southeastern edge of Broumov. It is considered the oldest surviving sacred building in the Czech Republic constructed entirely of wood, and at the same time one of the oldest structures of its kind in Central Europe. Its construction consists of sturdy oak beams joined together without a single nail. The Old Town Hall of Broumov is listed as a cultural monument and is one of the oldest town halls in Bohemian subject towns.
Monastery, garden and an excursion with children
Broumov Monastery offers a tour accessible year-round that is also suitable for children. The monastery garden is open to the public free of charge. This allows you to add another place to your monastery visit without incurring an additional admission fee for the garden.
Hiking in Broumovsko
In the CHKO Broumovsko Protected Landscape Area, the character of the landscape is shaped by the terrain, forests, meadows and pastures, meandering watercourses with riverside vegetation, scattered trees and shrubs, wildlife, rare flora and numerous cultural monuments. A relatively dense network of marked hiking trails of varying difficulty connects the notable places of Broumovsko. When planning, you can therefore distinguish between documented trail requirements and cultural destinations.
The “Broumovské stěny I” hiking route begins at the Old Town Hall in Broumov. It leads to the Zaječí rokle trail junction, where it continues on a yellow-marked hiking trail towards Kamenná brána and Koruna. Starting at a cultural monument and continuing through the landscape, the route provides a clearly described connection between local history and nature.
Brewing history in Olivětín
The Brewery Museum in Olivětín offers organized visitor groups guided tours of the production areas and provides insights into the production of one of the oldest monastery beers. There is also a small permanent exhibition on brewing history, focusing on the history of the brewery. This visit complements the cultural and nature experiences with an insight into a regional tradition.
The destinations described here offer different focuses, so you do not have to limit yourself to just one type of excursion.
