Nahořany nad Metují
Nahořany nad Metují combines a distinctive landscape setting with a local history in which church construction, historic routes, and preserved buildings come together. Its historical range extends from the 16th-century fortress to the extension of the chapel in 1908.
Landscape between the Rozkoš Reservoir and the Metuje River
The cadastral area of Nahořany borders the southeastern shore of the Rozkoš Reservoir directly. At the same time, Nahořany lies in a largely level landscape that slopes gently toward the Metuje River. The shoreline boundary belongs to the cadastral area, while the slope toward the Metuje describes the shape of the surrounding landscape. The two landscape references therefore do not lie on the same level: the reservoir marks the shoreline side, while the Metuje marks the slope of the terrain.
Orientation by present-day and historic routes
Nahořany lies on the district road from Nové Město nad Metují to Jaroměř. Historically, the Kłodzko–Poland highway passed through Nahořany and continued toward Provodov and Náchod. Two transport connections from different periods therefore meet in the village: the district road between Nové Město nad Metují and Jaroměř, and the historic route via Provodov and Náchod.
Church, chapel, and fortress
One of the cultural points of reference is the Church of the Holy Family in Nahořany. It is a subsidiary church of the Roman Catholic parish of Nové Město nad Metují. The construction history of the Chapel of the Holy Family comprises two separate stages. The foundation stone was laid on July 3, 1860, marking the beginning of construction. During a reconstruction, the chapel was extended westward in 1908 and fitted with a new brick tower. The western extension and the new tower therefore belong to the later reconstruction, while the laying of the foundation stone marks the beginning of construction. The church’s affiliation with the parish and the construction history describe two different levels: its integration into the parish and the chapel’s chronological development.
Another historic feature is the fortress building in Nahořany, which originally dates from the 16th century. The preserved road gate also points to an older village structure: its foundation dates from the 17th century. The gate was entered in the state list of cultural monuments on March 6, 1964. The dating of the gate refers to the 17th-century foundation, while 1964 denotes the later listing.
Rozkoš Cycle Path Project
Nahořany is also one of the municipalities connected to the Rozkoš Cycle Path Project. The project includes a newly built section. It begins in the Spyta district of Česká Skalice, runs toward Nové Město nad Metují, and follows road III/28517. The starting point of the described section is therefore in Spyta, while Nahořany belongs to the project as a connected municipality. The specific route starting point and the municipal connection are thus two different details within the same project.
