Božanov – Church, Hiking Trails and Sandstone Formations

Božanov combines historic buildings with marked trails, viewpoints and distinctive sandstone formations. You can combine cultural discoveries in the village with a hike or bike ride while also including destinations in the surrounding region.

Church and Historic Landmarks

The present-day building of the Church of St. Mary Magdalene was begun in 1709 and completed in 1743. The complex includes a late Gothic entrance gate to the cemetery dating from the 15th century. The church in Božanov also preserves a stone sacrament house, which was subsequently set into the façade of its early Baroque church tower. These three details give the church complex several historical points of interest that can be distinguished while exploring the village.

Another historical feature is the former agricultural farmstead at Božanov Nos. 247/248. It is considered a typical, relatively well-preserved Broumov farmstead from the mid-19th century. Božanov’s history therefore extends beyond the church building and also includes the region’s traditional rural architecture.

Sandstone, Views and Landscape

The yellow-marked detour from Pánův kříž leads to the Božanovský Špičák labyrinth with its picturesque sandstone formations. You can reach another landscape feature via a marked, one-kilometre detour from the U Koruny trail junction. It leads to the viewpoint on Koruna, from where you can see Božanov and part of the Broumov Basin.

Velká kupa and Signal are located in the vicinity of Božanov. Skalniak and Ptak are mountains in the surroundings of Božanov. “Louky u Božanova” refers to several meadows in the cadastral area of Božanov. The name therefore denotes a clearly identified landscape feature, without implying any additional use or a specific visitor offering.

Hiking and Cycling from Božanov

The hiking route from Božanov to Hvězda leads from the centre of Božanov to Hvězda and is classified as moderately difficult. For another way of getting around, the cycle route “Za krásami broumovských statků a k radkovské přehradě” begins in the centre of Božanov. Both pieces of information make it easier to choose between a hike and a bike ride, without equating the two experiences.

Božanov has a tourist border crossing on a hiking trail. This aspect adds a special border location to the trail information. The role it plays in your own planning depends on the route selected and the desired focus of your trip.

Destinations in the Surrounding Area

There are also historical destinations outside the village with different names and regional connections. Ścinawka Górna - Renesansowy dwór is a castle in the vicinity of Božanov. Zamek Homole is also a castle in the vicinity of Božanov. Muchołapka is a monument in the vicinity of Božanov. Zamek Rogowiec lies in the wider regional surroundings of Božanov. The destinations can therefore be viewed as different elements of a trip combining local history, castles and regional monuments.

When choosing your accommodation, you can first decide whether the historic sights in the village, the hiking route to Hvězda, the starting point of the cycle route in the centre or the destinations in the surrounding region should be the main focus. For comparison with other travel destinations, you can also view Machovska Lhota, Šonov U Nového Města Nad Metují, Šonov, Provodov-Šonov, Přibyslav Nad Metují, Dolní Radechová, Machov and Šestajovice U Jaroměře.
