Velichovky

Velichovky between spa tradition, history and educational trails

Velichovky combines a long spa tradition with freely accessible walking paths, historic sites and educational trails focusing on different topics. For you as a traveller, this means that you can discover the town through both its spa tradition and specific stories, buildings and paths. The spa history of Lázně Velichovky dates back to 1897. Lázně Velichovky specialises in treating disorders of the musculoskeletal system, giving the town a clearly recognisable historical and spa-related profile.

Spa Park and Spa Grounds

Velichovky Spa Park is freely accessible for walks. It therefore offers an immediately accessible part of the town, without requiring you to organise your stay exclusively around individual sights. The spa grounds also include Masarykův dům, the main building of the spa grounds. At the same time, Masarykův dům is the only immovable cultural monument in the spa grounds. Those interested in the connection between spa tradition and architectural history will therefore find a particularly clearly defined point of reference here.

Educational Trails with Two Different Perspectives

The history trail “Stezka historií obce Velichovky” begins at the municipal office and connects 16 historic sites. Wooden panels with historical photographs stand along the route; some of these photographs are more than 100 years old. The trail therefore makes history comprehensible not only through individual buildings, but also through visual material and several locations in the town.

The forest educational trail “Naučná lesní stezka” begins behind Brána lásky. It includes play features about trees and animals, as well as a newly built pavilion for resting. This gives the trail a different focus from the history trail: instead of historical photographs, nature topics, playful elements and a break at the pavilion take centre stage. For shared discoveries with children of different age groups, these two trails therefore offer different points of connection without promising the same experience.

Architectural History and Places of Remembrance

The protected area of the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord, Kostel Proměnění Páně in Czech, includes the church, the mortuary chapel, the surrounding wall and the access staircase. The church was founded in 1616 by Hanibal von Valdštejn and is a single-nave Renaissance building. The individual components of the protected area, together with the building’s form, make this an independent destination for anyone who wants to learn about historic architecture not only through a date, but also through its built surroundings.

Another historical layer is associated with Schörnerova vila in the spa park. In spring 1945, it was the place from which the command of the German Army Group Centre was directed. On 8 May 1945, the text of the surrender of the Third Reich arrived at Schörnerova vila. The MISE Velichovky event also includes a commemorative drive featuring historic vehicles from the period of the Second World War.
