Jasenná Among Church, Landscape, and Local History

Jasenná combines a distinctive ecclesiastical landmark with a varied cultural landscape. St. George’s Church is the dominant landmark of Jasenná and gives the village a clear focal point. Its first historically documented written mention dates from 1352. Today, it is a branch church of the Josefov parish, and services are held there regularly. Thus, in Jasenná, a long-documented history directly meets a religious function that continues to this day.

St. George and Historical Traces in the Village

The church contains a late Gothic polygonal stone baptismal font dating from 1521. This detail makes the long development of the place of worship tangible, without reducing its history to a single year. Historical markers from various periods can also be found outside the church. Jasenná has a war memorial commemorating the victims of the First World War, dating from 1922. It is a sandstone ensemble featuring a Russian legionnaire and a lion.

The memorial stands in the park in front of Jasenná Primary School. An iron crucifix from 1865–1866 also stands on the road by the park. Another distinctive feature is located at the crossroads near house no. 249: there stands a partially sunken sandstone cross known as a reconciliation cross or a Cyril and Methodius cross. These different monuments make Jasenná’s local history visible at several points.

Wide Views and Water in the Cadastral Area

In addition to its cultural monuments, Jasenná also has a strong connection to the landscape. At 295 m, Balcarák is the highest point in Jasenná’s cadastral area. From there, you can see far across the surrounding area, as well as the Orlické Mountains and the Giant Mountains. This creates a clear contrast with the concentrated village centre around the church: here, the focus is not on a single building but on the open view across the landscape.

The character of the cadastral area also includes a total of 12 ponds and water reservoirs. Water shapes the village in the form of the Jasenský potok, which flows through the whole of Jasenná. In some sections it runs through culverts, while in others it flows in open, paved channels. These different sections make the stream another tangible part of the village landscape, alongside the ponds, the Balcarák viewpoint, and the historic roadside markers.

Jasenná as a Destination in Its Own Right

Jasenná is located on a third-class road from Jaroměř to Český Meziříčí, Opočno, and Dobruška. This road connection places the village within its immediate surroundings, but does not provide specific distances or travel times to individual sights.
