Forests, trails and seasonal experiences

The landscape of Český les consists of extensive forests alternating with pastures, meadows and overgrown open areas. A specific hiking experience is the 9 km-long, moderately difficult route from Dům přírody Českého lesa to Chodovské skály. This provides a clearly described route connecting woodland scenery with rock formations.

The municipal forests of Domažlice can also be explored on guided excursions. These are offered for organised groups and individuals and include two route options focusing on forests, wildlife and history. In winter, cross-country ski trails around Čerchov are maintained. When planning a stay, this is a seasonal addition to the hiking and cultural experiences. Chod Culture and the History of Domažlice

The Chodské slavnosti festival has been held since 1955 and combines the folklore of Chodsko with the pilgrimage to Vavřinec.

Today, the Muzeum Chodska is located in Chodský hrad in Domažlice. The exhibition is rich and diverse. The Muzeum J. Jindřicha displays numerous folk-cultural objects collected in Chodsko and also owns an extensive collection of reverse-glass paintings. In Domažlice, you can therefore discover different aspects of regional culture, from everyday objects and folk art to the history of the town.

The remains of Domažlice’s town fortifications also provide historical orientation. They date from the period when the town was founded in the second half of the 13th century. Dolní brána dates approximately to 1270, while Bezděkovská branka was probably built at the end of the 15th century. The three details represent different phases of the town’s history and provide concrete chronological points of reference during a walk.

Horšovský Týn, Regional Products and Beer

For a visit to the chateau in Horšovský Týn, the area directly next to the chateau is designated as a visitor car park. There is a bicycle rack at the entrance gate to the chateau grounds; however, bicycles may not be taken inside the chateau grounds. This clear regulation is particularly relevant if you would like to combine a cycling trip with a visit to the chateau.

Domažlice District also has clear regional culinary associations. Regional products include Chodské koláče from Bořice as well as regional baked goods and confectionery from Domažlice. The beers Domažlická, Čerchov, Čakan and Domažlický doppel are associated with Městský pivovar Domažlice.
